What years were you a Ball Boy?

1949

What courts did you look after, what age were you?

I was on No 3 court and court 13 then I landed on Centre court on the first Thursday of Wimbledon. I was 16 years of age.

Did you enjoy the task and why?

I did not enjoy my time at Wimbledon, I was bored most of the time.

Did anything unusual/funny happen whilst you were on court?

Monday 20th June 1949 is recorded the day I rolled a ball to Miss Moran who had to bend over to pick it up, I did it to brighten our day. In truth it was done as a bet for 2d this was on centre court. Miss Moran was the first lady player to wear frilly panties, I will say no more, but I won my bet. While I didn't get a view of what the rest of the court was seeing and sending the press photographers wild I just got a good look at her bra who said to me, "boy that took some guts" as she stood up. I was then called to the umpires chair to be told how to pass the ball to the player. The bad news Gorgeous Gussy lost the match.

Which player did you most enjoy meeting and why?

Jaroslav. Drobny as he respected us ball boys and would always say thank you and treated us with respect.

Miss Moran ( Gorgeous Gussy) see above.

Who is your favourite tennis player today?

Don’t have one.

Do you play tennis now and if so do you belong to a club?

No and never have and at the age of 70 I don’t think I will start now.

Would you like to add any further information?

The Rev S. Corbett was not in attendance the day of the Gorgeous Gussy bet as he was in attendance of his wife who was about to give birth to their second child.

I was privileged to be asked to stand down on the second day of the second week, so I could get back to Goldings workshops. The food at Wimbledon was quite bad but not as bad as Goldings. But now we all know why I was removed.

I wanted to go to Wimbledon as it sounded good, and it would give me some extra money for the summer holidays.

I didn't make it to Wimbledon in 1950 I was chosen, but went sick. The uniform we had to wear was quite a thick shirt and long trousers and on a hot day it was very sweaty and I was  indomitable that I would be in a cooler place and 1950 was even hotter.
