What
years were you a Ball Boy? 1946/47 What courts did you look after, what age were you? All courts except centre and no1 other schools from London covered the two main courts but in 1947 Goldings took over. I was aged 15/16 Did you enjoy the task and why? In those days. it was a great honour to be picked, and I was very proud to ride on the ball boy express. The second year I had the job of putting the notices to tell the public what courts the players were playing on. I also used to report on matches to an American reporter, he then sent it to fleet street on the teleprinter. That was good. Did anything unusual/funny happen whilst you were on court? Not really you didn't get involved too much. But we did sell a few cups and saucers ! We were told. if you do not understand what a player said to you, just smile, some of the players used to throw the balls at you. when you did that! Which player did you most enjoy meeting and why? D. Pails, T. Mottrom, J. Bromich, P. Betze, S. Fry, E. Williams, M. Cucello. Also a great man F. Read. he only had one arm. Yes only one arm, but only got to the first round. Who is your favourite tennis player today? Pete Sampras Do you play tennis now and if so do you belong to a club? No never Would you like to add any further information? Thank you hope my few word help. ? From: Derek Mitchell |
