Further photos from
Goldings
1950 - 1954

This was taken in the
summer of 1951 at
Dymchurch camp. Back left to right is
Snowy Payne,
Mr Maslin (office manager during the ‘50s),
Skipper Culver, Derek Newham and Ostle. Middle is Len
Brotherwood, Jim Booker and Simmonds. Front middle looks like
Sid Whitbread and on his left is the other Ostle twin. Can’t
remember the boy on his right.
Below left by the looks of
things this is
Dymchurch again, taken about 1952. Standing is
Johnny Woods, Goode (I think), Ivan Snow and Bill Cotton.
Kneeling is
Tommy Cotton and Whacker Walker. I think Whacker gave me this
photograph. Tommy Cotton I knew from
New Lodge, Windsor. I was given to understand that his brother
Bill became a missionary.
I recently learned that
Tommy is no longer with us. It came as a bit of a surprise but
it shouldn't do, as all the lads in these photographs are cracking
on a bit now!
Above right not a very good
photo, but on the back I have written Battersby, Hornby and
Warren.
It would have been taken around 1952-53 on the parade ground. You
can just about see the canteen to the left and the ablution block to
the right.

Maurice
Munson, 1951 |

Clive
Measey, 1953 |

Derek
Mundey, 1953 |
The photo of Maurice
seems a bit like a school photo, perhaps taken just before he left
New Lodge. I knew him at
Windsor before I left for Goldings.
This photo of Clive
was taken along North Road near one of the bridges just outside
Goldings gates.
For Derek, this is a
typical pose. He was very keen on the choir. Received a Christmas
card from him this year. Inside was a little message telling me that
this was the 55th year he had sent me a Christmas card! He is
retired and lives near Ipswich.

The
cricket team 1954
From right to left
it is: (1)
Vic King, (2) Tony Fox, (3) Tony Williams, (5 and 6)
the
Brierley twins, (9) Les Fripp, (10) Graham Ferris, (11)
Maurice
Munson.
I am not sure if
these two photos of the School football team are from the same
season of 1951-52 or if one is from the following year. In the team
above left I recognise Peter Tabor (goal), Bert Bumford (left back),
Murphy Mott (centre half), Thompson (left half), Ostle
(right wing),
Whacker Walker (inside right), Alan Blackburn (centre forward),
inside left not recognised, Williams (outside left).
I met Len “Murphy”
Mott in the 1980s when I was working in Fleet Street. He was a
Linotype operator on the Sunday People. Last I heard he had retired
and was living in Epping.
There are only a
couple of different faces here from the team above, but I think this
is the later of the two. On the other hand, maybe there have just
been a couple of substitutions!
Best wishes, Richard
(Dick) Davies. 114 Aberdeen House
