THE GOLDONIAN

GOLDINGS PERSONALITIES

Mr. Robert Newton

He was Born in Newcastle on the 29th June 1925. as a young adult he joined the elite 22nd Parachute Regiment, and was part of the Pathfinder group that were tasked to mark the drop zone and guide the D Day parachute and glider units in using special Eureka beacons.

Mr. Newton was working in Hull when he saw the post at Goldings advertised, he applied for the position and as we know he got the job. In October of 1954 Mr. Newton joined the Goldings staff as Executive Officer and  Physical Training Instructor. To list all the school activities in which Mr. Newton has taken an active part would be difficult; to list those in which he has not been interested would be easy. This speaks for itself, and few people who have called on him for help and advice have not found it willingly forthcoming.

We have all admired the cheerful, enthusiastic, and robust way in which he has always tackled new ideas, and much of this has 'rubbed off' on those who have worked with him, and the results have been consequently better for it.

When things go well it is easy to take them for granted, but behind the high standard of success which Mr. Newton attained in our yearly calendar of sporting and social events, there was always a great deal of forethought and planning; chance was never allowed to play much part in his plans.

Mr. Newton can be heard as we all know, but we also know that this does not suggest that he is an empty barrel, and many of the innovations he has added to the school life are evidence of this. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the new Adventure Course are but two recent examples.

One other task Mr. Newton and his wife looked after was the running of the Verney Hostel,  Waterford  from September 1958 to Jan 1965 which housed 14 senior boys that were printing apprentices.

At the end of this present spring term 1964 he leaves us to join the Hertford College of Further Education as Tutor / Organizer for Physical Activities. He will be leaving our school, but not the local area, and we know that he will be calling in to see us from time to time. He will certainly be most welcome, and may we all wish him every success and happiness in his new work.
