10 to 12 Sutherland Road,
Mutley,
Plymouth,
Devon.

10/12 Sutherland Road was opened August 1970, providing mixed accommodation for children. Closed 1981.

Were you at Sutherland Road? No, you probably weren't because our unit was only for six years olds! However, you might remember us a little better, as part of the Quarries at Exeter.

Here at Sutherland Road, we can take twelve children of all ages. Our speciality is in caring for "short-term" children. Our work involves working with the family, in the hope that the child or children can be quickly restored to the parents, or be suitably fostered. Although this aspect of our caring might seem a little disjointed, it is, in fact, very rewarding, in that we have had several happy endings with the children being fostered and are now happily adopted!

Most of our children are encouraged to join some outside activity. In fact, at present we are attached to two Boys' Brigade Companies, one Girls' Company and Army Cadets.

We still keep in contact with several ex-members of staff, including one in Australia. I am sure many of you will remember Miss Winifred Andrews, who worked for many years in Barnardo's. We still keep in touch with her and the children are always delighted to see her when she visits, as she did just before Christmas of 1976.
