Her Majesty’s Hospital Home

Her Majesty’s Hospital Home was opened in 1888 as a hospital for sick children. Closed in 1922 work taken over by J.C. Hanbury Hospital. The block was re-opened as an office block and named Barnardo House.

History:

To mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Thomas had built Her Majesty’s Hospital for sick children as part of the Stepney development, at a cost of £7,800. It is recorded as being three-and-a-half stories high and contained six general wards, plus isolation and a convalescent wards. The hospital also had its own operating theatre and was one of the first Hospitals to focus on children's diseases. The standards for hygiene were very high for its time, born out by the low mortality rate. Which was another triumph of Dr. Thomas Barnardos visions. One more fact at the beginning of the twentieth century Her Majesty’s Hospital was the largest children's hospital in London.
