New Mossford a mixed home for disabled children with educational provision was opened July 1975 On the 14th October 1975 saw the official opening by HRH Princess Margaret, President of Dr Barnardo' s, of a new centre providing residential care, education, medical treatment, and physiotherapy for 60 severely handicapped children. Built a few hundred yards from the site of the doctor's old home, it is named New Mossford. The aim of New Mossford is to seek the maximum possible personal development of each child mentally, physically, and emotionally through integrated care, education, therapy, and social work. The development of the child's self dependence is a major concern, and the intention is to return the child to an ordinary school and home whenever this is considered possible and beneficial. The end of 1984 was an eventful time in the history of Barnardo's. HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon announced she was relinquishing her role as President but we were delighted The Princess was to continue as a Patron. HRH The Princess of Wales was to be Barnardo's new President. She wasted no time in visiting some of the projects. In February 1985 she visited Barkingside where she met children from New Mossford. New Mossford was officially closed in 1992. In 2006 the buildings are still empty. |
