Barnardo School of Printing
William Baker House,
Mead Lane,
Hertford.
Tel: Hertford 2085

While this was never a home the building was built at a cost of £40,000 in 1968 and was opened 27th September 1969. The printing apprentice boys left Goldings and moved to Mead Lane to the new Barnardo School of printing. Due to the cost of running the school Barnardo's closed the print school in March 1991

From Barnardo News, November 1969

The high standard of training and facilities which have combined to meet the social and technological needs of individual boys at the Barnardo School of Printing were praised by Mr. H. B. Verity, D.S.O., D.F.C., M.A., Director of the Printing and Publishing Industry Training Board, when he opened the School's new premises at Hertford.

Over three hundred people, including representatives of the printing industry and the youth employment service, the Mayor and Mayoress of Hertford, Old Boys of the School and members of the School and members of Barnardo staff and their families, were present at the opening of the School in Mead Lane, Hertford, on 27th September 1969.

The boys at the new £40,000 school were receiving excellent training for good jobs, said Mr. Verity and "members of the Printing Industry Training Board's staff have reported on the very high standard of training that goes on here; the apprentices are being given a very fine start as printers."

"The Training Board", he said, "had to see that the quality of training was good, and the cost was properly shared. Representatives from industry and educational fields helped keep the Board in touch with the right training policy for the future."

Mr. Verity told the apprentices: "You are very lucky in having a first-class start to your careers. This is only the first rung of the ladder. I hope that all through your working lives, if there is any need for further training, the work done by the Training Board will prove to be of help to you."
