Glandare House was opened July 1950 The Superintendent was an Ex Policeman Henry Gratwick and his Wife who looked after the children in Glandare from about 1950 to about 1960. The home had approximately 30 boys, then in 1966 Glandare House officially became a home for boys and girls. Glandare House finally closed its doors December 1970 with the children moving to the newly built Glandare House in Newport. Henry Gratwick with his wife emigrated to Australia. He passed away in 2003. 114/3 Childhood Memories a photographic history of Dr Barnardo's.
I get quite a few emails from some old boys and girls saying I have the name wrong it should be "Glandarf House" quoting Childhood Memories a photographic history of Dr Barnardo's which was put together by The Barnardo Old boys and girls National Council who with the help of The then After Care Dept recorded it as Glandarf House which was an error that in its creation has perpetuated a mythical establishment of Dr. Barnardo's.....Then in 20/3/08
Ed. Well the official records show it became a mixed home in 1966 I think up till then siblings were placed together in one home. You will find boys placed in the Village Home prior to 1945 when again this is the official date when Barkingside became a mixed home.

but she is always happy to hear from old boys and girls. The photos below
is of me aged about 10 years old. The second photo shows Wendy Gasner and
myself about same age. Photo 3 shows Carol Harrison, Gillian Ramsey and
myself on our confirmation day. The next photo shows some of us petting a
donkey.
