Craigerne residential school
Peebles.
Peeblesshire
Scotland

Craigerne was opened April 1956 as a residential school for boys with emotional difficulties. Craigerne closed June 1989 and it would seem was passed to the Scottish Education Department.

In the winter of 1982 it was reported: Boys at Craigerne School, Peebles, are starting the new school year with a brand new assembly hall-cum-gymnasium, and improved classroom facilities. The facelift, costing just over £90,000, has been achieved with a 60 per cent grant from the Scottish Education Department.

Until recently the 25 pupils and staff at the school have had to make do with four classrooms, two of which have been too small; an area designated as an assembly hall which because of size, layout, and proximity to adjoining classrooms made it difficult to use for drama or PE without causing a disturbance; and poor toilet facilities.

Now all four classrooms have been upgraded and have hot and cold water and cupboard storage. The new assembly hall-cum-gymnasium has room for a portable stage, can seat 90 people, and the boys will be able to enjoy their PE and drama classes to the full. New toilets have also been installed.

The new building and alterations to the existing school block has also meant the release of two rooms for alternative accommodation. Staff now have a preparation-cum-tutorial room and for the boys there is a workshop and darkroom.
