Boughton Hall was opened 1945 as a Dr Barnardo home. In September of 1971 Boughton Hall changed to a mixed hostel for children with emotional difficulties. Boughton Hall closed as a Dr. Barnardo home in February of 1982. Eighteen months later on November 17th Boughton Hall was re-opened as a intermediate centre in partnership with Cheshire Social Services Department. The opening ceremony was performed by the Duke of Westminster.

In recent years Barnardo's in partnership with Cheshire Social Services have provided a service for children involved in youth justice proceedings. This service was handed over to Cheshire County Council in 1999 The project closed it's door 2000. Since then Barnardo's have maintained the building and have overseen security.

In the weekly planning list 13/2/2006 Barnardo's Developments Ltd have submitted two planning applications for: Refurbishment of hall, Conversion and construction of extra care accommodation and associated facilities
