Ashdene was opened 1902 as a home for boys then in 1929 the home provided training for girls moved from Wordsworth Road. In the years 1939 to 1940 Dr. Barnardo's used it as a hostel for boys in transit between homes or until a permanent place could be found. The home was closed during war years 1939 to 1945. After the war the the home re-opened as a home for boys. Ashdene finally closed it's door as a Barnardo's home in December 1973.
