Winton Drive was opened December 1959. It
became a mixed
hostel from 1961-67. 36/20 Childhood Memories a photographic history of Dr Barnardo's FAREWELL TO 23 WINTON DRIVE, GLASGOW On Monday, 15th May 1972, a Thanksgiving Service was held in the Glasgow Branch Home (23 Winton Drive) to give thanks to God for ten years of work in this particular home, which is now to close. It was, in many ways, a memorable evening. Representatives from the schools which the children had attended were present, neighbours and friends had also gathered and we are pleased to record that four Old Boys represented the children who had passed through the home over the years, whilst Miss MacKinnon represented ex-members of staff. Mr. Stockton represented Public Relations, and we were so pleased to have Mrs. B. Trembath, Divisional Officer, with us, along with Miss S. A. Massey, and Miss Amory. After the short Thanksgiving Service, Mr. Thompson then ran one of his films "Great Hymns and their stories". Light refreshments were then served and this gave people the opportunity of an informal chat and get-together. Our only regret was that we were unable to invite more people, owing to lack of accommodation. Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Thompson, who were Joint Superintendents at Winton Drive, are being transferred. N.B.- The above only refers to 23 Winton Drive, which has been in existence for the last ten years, but there was, prior to that a branch home in Glasgow at No. 5 Winton Drive for many years. The superintendents there were Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, and it was on the death of Mr. Shaw that No. 5 was sold and a move was made to smaller premises at No. 23. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, prior to taking charge at 23 Winton Drive, were house parents at North Berwick, East Lothian, where Mr. and Mrs. Mace were superintendents. THE GUILD MESSENGER AUGUST 1973 |
