The story of this photograph, it was
taken at Woodford Bridge, Essex. This was the start of a Home Office
course. It was taken in about 1954 and the staff were instructed to look
as if they were either writing notes or looking at the instructor / course
tutor who was standing in the corner.
How do I know this ? My wife is related to one of the students in this
picture, a small clue she said she had been looking up but just as the
shutter went down, she looked down. Her name? Jennifer, but that's not the
person that you should recognise, second clue, he is sitting next to
Margaret Armstrong-Johnson. Find Pop then you need not ask " Who's
Margaret Armstrong-Johnson"
Some more clues: he came to Goldings in 1956, he was given his nickname by
an very well-known old boy Brian Balderson. In 1957 he was captain of the
Old Boys football team, and personally scored sixty goals that season. He
attended Hookergate Grammar School, he left at the age of sixteen, then
served an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, then he got some in with the
R.A.F National Service, then did about a year back at his trade
bricklaying, at which time we see him in this picture. He was an avid
player of competitions, and entered various ones each week waiting for the
big one. Last but not least he is listed as 'personality number 29' in the
final Goldonian.
He was also reported the
last master out of Goldings?
He was the last master featured in the school magazine?
He was the last housemaster of Pelham?
"He concentrates with eyes of steele" was an
