Attached is a “Family at War” a photograph taken in 1940. This
photograph was taken in the front room at The Lodge, which you refer
to it as the Gatehouse, but in our family it was always, “The
Lodge”.
This family is the “Vaughan’s” who resided at the Lodge from
1925 to 1950. Those persons relevant to the history of Goldings
and Dr Barnardo’s Homes are; Rear row far left: Charles Edwin
Vaughan (1919 – 1978), who would later be Superintendent at Dr
Barnardo’s Home, Britannia Cottage and Kings Cottage,
Garden City, and
then in 1953
Spennells, Kidderminster.
Rear row 2nd left : Owen Wilfred Vaughan
(1889 – 1973), Had started the Vaughan's work for Dr Barnardo's when returned from the 1st World War a P.O.W. and took up
the position of
Gardener at Goldings and had residence at the Lodge,
oral tradition has it, that Owen was nicknamed “Sausage”, whilst
working at Goldings, possibly due to the state he had arrived back
from Germany. After Goldings Owen worked for the Barnardo's
Architects' Department. On retirement Owen lived in the prefabs situated
next to Dr Barnardo’s, Caldicot, Abingdon. Owen Wilfred Vaughan
passed away 21st May 1973
Front row far left : Josephine Vaughan
nee’ Carter (1920 – 1998), came from Myrtle Cottage Rowlands Gill
Newcastle upon Tyne to work in the
Sick Bay at Goldings circa
1937/8. Married 23rd Feb 1940 to Charles Edwin Vaughan, at St
Michael & All Angels, Waterford. Later Josephine became the Senior Matron at Kings Cottage,
Garden City and then at
Spennells
Kidderminster.
Front row 2nd Left : Alice Marion
Vaughan nee’ Rhodes(1889 – 1965), had married Owen Wilfred Vaughan
in 1912 at Boxmoor Baptist Chapel whilst residing at 12 Railway St.
Alice worked as a Cook along side her husband (the Gardener) at
Goldings.
The two gentleman at the rear to the right are Bill & Eric Vaughan
sons of Owen & Alice, the lady to the front right is Margaret
Vaughan nee’ Searle wife of Eric Vaughan.
The one person not shown in the photo is myself, Owen John Vaughan
born in 1946 at The Lodge, (Gatehouse) Goldings, and baptised at
Goldings Chapel.
On the death of my mother Mrs. Josephine Vaughan 25th June 1998 soon
after I deposited a very
large collection of photographs with Dr Barnardo’s Homes at
Barkingside, some I know of her time at Goldings, Garden City and
sports days at
Barkingside
The Village Home.

The photo above was taken 1998 when Owen
and his mother returned to view their old home and Waterford Church I
wonder if they went to see the
old sickbay
that has now been turned into living des res. This is where Miss Josephine
Carter had started looking
after the health of Goldings boys back in 1937/8.
The lodge had no tenants that I know
from 1964 till the school closed in 1967 I had the job of replacing
broken pains of glass from 1965 to 1966 and noted the inside was run
down and quite damp. In 1966 the inside was redecorated by the boys
of the painting and decorating dept, but then the news broke about the impending
closure of Goldings.
