House Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. C. Steele Usually we reserve the best wishes to everyone until the end of house notes. However, as this is the last issue of the Goldonian the most important thing now is not what has gone before but what is to happen in the future. We in Pelham sincerely hope that as one door is closing another one is waiting to open both for boys and staff. We especially thank staff who have spent almost a lifetime at Goldings, this includes our ex‑Headmaster Mr. Wheatley, who recently retired; we all wish him and Mrs. Wheatley a long and happy retirement. Best wishes to all and a big thank you for all the help in the past. As the numbers in the School decreased it was decided to close down Cairns House. Boys who came into Pelham were, Dennis and Robert Young, Paul Talbot, Stephen Williams, Ray Allan, Robert Willbourne and David Gallagher. Boys who have left since our last issue include, G. Carr (H. Capt.), Ray Speer, D. Gallagher, G. and P. Bolton, S. Critchley, S. Ellwood, C. Davis, A. Williams, and D. Young; we all wish them lots of success. Last term Pelham once again carried off the most coveted trophy in the School The Queens' Cup for the best overall house. On Prize Day we in Pelham got a large share of the prizes going: English and Printing (Comp.), R. Davis; Senior P.E. and D. of E. Bronze, Malcolm Holloway; Shoemaking, R. Speer; Carpenter (junior), A. Williams; Painting (junior) and D. of E. Bronze, P. Man; Painting (Senior), G. Carr; Printing (Machine), R. Willbourne; Sheet Metal (junior) and D. of E. Bronze, M. Ellise; Sheet Metal (Senior), D. Gallagher; D. of E. Bronze, S. Ellwood. In the Swimming Sports Kenneth Mount won the junior Victor Ludorum. A coincidence in the sports was the newly featured half mile race in which Pelham won both the junior and Senior events. Ken Mount and Robert Davis were the winners. Mr. Montgomery, warden of Cartref Melys, is extending his field of adventure training by starting a project in Scotland. In the preparatory work of getting the house ready he has been assisted by two of our boys of the Painting and Decorating Department, Peter Man and Melvyn Holloway, who spent a very productive two weeks painting the house. Finally the School motto which in English reads, 'The End Crowns the Work', means that one is judged by the finished job, and although it is 'The End' of Goldings, its name will still be judged for many years to come by the work completed by its 'Old Boys'. House Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. C. Steele I should like to start these notes by wishing our House parents Mr. and Mrs. Burton a happy and bright future in their new home. We all hope they will be able to come and see us sometime. We did not have many arrivals or leavers in our house during last term but we hope that the two boys who joined our ranks, C. Stone and J. Barnett, enjoy their stay in Pelham. This term we started off a lot better in the Queens' Cup competition and due to the hard work of the boys we now lead. Last term, however, we did not do so well and came in a sorry third position. Alas we have not done so well in the football and cricket fixtures and were defeated in the inter-House matches. In the cross country we came third in both junior and senior events and J. Law was first in the senior event with a thrilling run with R. Mount second. There are still the swimming and inter-House sports to compete in yet, so perhaps there is a chance for us there. We are all saddened a little at the departure of Mr. Culver (Skipper) and wish him all the best and hope he is getting on well in his new occupation. G. CARR |

House Notes
Housemaster:
Mr.
and Mrs. Goodman Once' again it is time to put pen to paper and it gives me great pleasure to write the notes for Pelham House. First of all ,we would like to welcome J. Adams from Barkingside, and C. Culling from Norwich. As some come some must go, and so we have said good bye to G. Pfaff, G. White, T. Bains, W. Campbell, and D. Langler. We wish them all the best for the future. We also congratulate B. West on being accepted as an apprentice in the Printing Department, and Kevin Law on his promotion to House Captain. It was at the beginning of this term that we suffered the tragic loss of David Abdi, which came as a great blow to everyone, especially all of us in Pelham who admired him greatly. We all miss him very much. I am pleased to say that Pelham won The Queens' Cup by a very good margin, our nearest rival being 100 points behind. To celebrate the occasion we had a party organized by our House parents. Also Kensington won the dormitory shield with a great effort, which was an extra celebration for them, and all the boys enjoyed the party very much. The swimming pool was opened at Easter but the weather being cold did not encourage many to take the plunge. However, Whitsun was a different story, with the weather lovely and hot there was great activity in the pool, and then it had to be emptied for cleaning which resulted in an ever increasing queue asking when will the pool be open, "Skip"? A word of thanks to 'Skip' for keeping the pool clean and tidy. We would like to congratulate the following boys for gaining their junior 'A' football certificates, and for being members of the School team who won the Lea Valley League: R. Hillier, K. Law, R. Merrifield. In the inter-House football final we drew with Aberdeen 3-3' for the second year running we won the Senior and junior Cross Country cups, with Gordon White and Joey Law coming first and second in the senior event. The Junior team actually drew with Cairns for first place, with Ray Mount coming third for our team. We have only played two games of cricket so far, but we have been victorious on both occasions, beating Somerset by 20 runs and Aberdeen by 4 runs. We have four boys playing in the School team, viz.: B. West, R. Hillier, J. Law, and S. Howard. In closing our notes we would like to wish Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, and all the staff and boys a very pleasant summer holiday. KEVIN LAW, LESLIE JOHNSON |

House Notes
Housemaster:
Mr.
and Mrs. Goodman Once again the time has come to write our notes for THE GOLDONIAN. First I would like to welcome into Pelham, Mr. and Mrs. Goodman, who are both doing a wonderful job for the House. Also I would like to say thank you to Mr. Steele who did a very good job in Pelham last term. I am sure that what he did was very much appreciated by all the boys. I would also like to welcome to our house S. Clarke, S. Ellwood, Melvin and Malcolm Holloway, A. Williams, G. Bowler, S. Critchley, K. Mount, R. Williams, and T. Goymer. We hope they enjoy their stay with us whether it be long or short. As some come so must some go and I would like to take this opportunity of saying goodbye to M. Butt, C. Florence, J. Murphy, and Chamberlain. We wish them every success for the future. I am glad to be able to say that once again Pelham are in the lead for the Queens Cup. During the term we had two visits from our former House Captain Eddy Budd who is getting on very well. I would like to congratulate R. Unwin (Proff) on winning the Junior Chess Competition. Congratulations also to R. Hillier and D. Abdi for gaining their 'A' Certificate and to B. West for gaining his 'B' Certificate. SENIOR: Football. As there are only four houses now, there was not very much competition as only one game had to be played to get to the final. Pelham were drawn to play Somerset and I am glad to say we won 9 - 0, especially as we lost last year, being beaten in the semi-finals by Cairns. So for the first time in the history of Pelham we hope to bring the football cup into the house. We had quite a few of our lads play for the school, namely: D. Langler, R. Hillier, R. Merrifield, S. Howard, D. Ager, C. Hill, B. Campbell and D. Abdi. Also K. Law for Junior 'A'. Well done boys. I would like to finish these notes by wishing Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, all staff and boys, a very happy Eastertide. D. LANGLER |

House Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. C. Steele Once again it is time to look back into our diaries to remind us of the activities we have had this term. Firstly I should like to welcome the following six boys not only to Pelham House but also to Goldings and hope their stay will be a happy one. Kevin Man (who joins his two brothers in Pelham), Kenneth Stephens, Brian Stephens, David Powell Robert Unwin, and John Robson. We are sorry to have to say goodbye to Peter Law who was our cricket team captain. We all wish him the best of luck in the future and a most successful career. Last term Pelham managed to win back the most coveted trophy in the School, the Queens' Cup. This term's competition is wide open and at the time of writing only a few points separate Pelham, Aberdeen, and Somerset, any one of three houses can carry off the trophy. In the cricket Inter‑House competition both Pelham juniors and seniors got into the finals. The juniors were beaten by Aberdeen juniors but the Seniors won their section by beating Cairns in an exciting game. We did very badly in the Inter‑House swimming but we managed to win two events. Charlie Hill won the springboard dive and David Langler won the high dive. We did much better in the athletics. After a hard struggle Pelham juniors just failed to beat MacAndrew for first place. Congratulations to Gordon White on not only winning the Victor Ludorum but for gaining half of the junior points! Well done Gordon and hard luck juniors. The Inter‑House football hasn't really started yet but we have had three juniors in the junior 'A' School team; Ray Hillier (Capt.), Raymond Man, and David Abdi In the Senior 'A' team we are very well represented by David Langler, Derek Hammond, Ray Hillier, Stephen Howard, Charlie Hill, Dennis Ager, and Billy Campbell Quite a few Pelham boys received prizes at Prize‑giving Day namely David Langler, Senior Painter; Derek Hammond, General Standard; Joey Law, junior Painters; Michael Butt, Senior Bootmakers; Raymond Man, Intermediate Gardeners; and Christopher Florence, Senior Gardeners. I should like to finish these notes by wishing Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley and all the staff and boys a very happy Christmas. David Langler |

House Notes House Parents: Mr. and
Mrs. J. Chapman First of all we would like to say cheerio to Eddie Budd, Charles Loveday, Philip Harrington, and the two Brooke brothers, also Peter Turral, who have left just recently. We hope that they get on well outside, and work their way up in the world. We also welcome the following new boys, David Boardman, and Glyn Lebechee, who has joined us since Christmas. We would like to thank the boys of both football teams (eleven aside and five aside) Senior, for reaching the top (so far so good). But we miss Eddie, CharIie, Phil and Peter as they were all very good sportsmen. The painters have started painting and decorating the bays, and have nearly finished. They all look swell (they should do as six of the painters are Pelham boys). We would like to thank all the boys in Pelham for working hard and winning the Queens' Cup once more this term. We are glad to see that Mr. and Mrs. Chapman have settled in nicely, and now we are all one big happy family. DANIEL COFFEY |

House Notes House Parents: Mr. and
Mrs. J. H. Hunt After a very short term Goldonian time is upon us once again and so on behalf of my House Parents, and the House, I append these few notes, and it gives me great pleasure to do so. Firstly we extend a warm welcome to our four new members of the House namely: Michael Bains, Thomas Bains, Gordon White, and Stephen Chamberlain, and we wish them every happiness during their stay in Pelham, We have not lost any members of the House this term so we have no goodbyes to make. Three old boys came to visit us during Whitsun, they were: David Pike, our ex. House Captain, Ray Hood, an ex. Group Leader, and Paul Smith. We were very pleased to see them and they all said they enjoyed their visit to the School and House. 'Dad', meaning David Pike of course, gave us a display of his good quality again by being a sterling help in the Dining Hall, many thanks David. We hope to see you all again in the future. After a great battle of points with MacAndrew House we managed to bring the Queens' Cup back to Pelham, and I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Hunt and all the boys for helping me to achieve this, and we intend to hang on to it as long as possible, so keep up the team spirit. we done very well Looking on the sporting side of the House for a short term. The first event was the school cross ‑ country race, Dennis King was first in the Seniors and Edward Budd third; Joseph Law was second in the juniors. Well done Joseph! Pelham juniors managed to clinch the Junior cup, the Seniors lost the Senior cup by one point and so, took second place. At the finish of the Football season our juniors were beaten in the semi-final of the cup by Cairns 3‑2. A hard game and first class opposition. Our scorers were, S. Howard and C. Hill. Cairns eventually went on to win the final so our juniors did not do too badly. Certificates won this year were: Gymnastics: D. Coffey, P. Harrington. Swimming: P. Law, C. Hill and B. Brooks, but have not yet received them. Art: George Parr received a certificate and he also had a painting shown in the National Gallery in London, which was highly commended well done George we are proud of you but don't get a big head! We are now in the new term and all looking forward to a good time at Wimbledon and also praying that the present sunny weather may continue and give us all a happy Dymchurch and a really happy time during the holidays. With my House Parents' permission I have asked for two photographs of Pelham to be inserted in this terms notes. One was taken after a hectic twist session organized by Mrs. Hunt in our sitting room; Danny Coffey playing his guitar was the sensation of the evening. The other is of course Balmoral waiting for their House Captain to tuck them in bed.

House Notes
House parents:
Mr. and Mrs. Jones It is my pleasure to write the House Notes for Pelham this term. We have quite a number of events this term so we have quite a lot to write about. Not many weeks ago we had a visit from Harold Holberry, he told us he is at college and doing quite well. We were sorry to say goodbye to Reith Boden and Paul Smith, but we would like to welcome P. Harrington, W. Dunsford, and D. Graham. We would also like to say we are sorry to say goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Ludbrook and Rim their poodle. We did not have much success in the football but nevertheless we all enjoyed it to the utmost. While we are on the subject of sport I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Mr. Steele for organizing the table tennis tournament. Teddy Budd took his R.S.A. Examination at Scott House and everybody in Pelham would like to wish him the very best of luck and we hope he passes with flying colours. We were sorry to say goodbye to Richard Rowles as he is now at the Verney. I have just been told to take this opportunity of thanking Richard for the service he rendered to Pelham by insisting on keeping the bathroom 'spic and span'. Thanks Dickie! R. A. RAM |

House Notes
House parents:
Mr. and Mrs. Jones Another term is drawing to its close and another edition of THE GOLDONIAN makes its appearance, bringing with it the news of the Schools' comings and goings to date. We welcome to our House, since the last publication, Tony Ramsey, a pleasant little chap who has made himself one of the family straight away. Notable departures have been David Marno and Paul Everitt who left us to take up positions at Chester and Wrexham respectively. We wish them every success and God speed in their new spheres of labour. In the field of sport we were successful in pulling off the cup for the Junior Cricket section and we offer our congratulations to Aberdeen House for securing the trophy for the seniors. In spite of being badly whacked in some of the senior games, we nevertheless greatly enjoyed the sport produced from these tussles, they were all played in the best of spirits, and that's what really matters. We are delighted to record that Derek King has been awarded his School Colours for swimming, a great honour well and truly gained. We are still in possession of the Queens' Cup of which we are justly proud. We must add that the competition is now being very keenly contested and a very high standard is being maintained throughout the School, and for the first time we have had to haul down our flag to Aberdeen from the premier position. Still, whilst we intend to .make a fight of it, we do extend to our colleagues and the whole of Aberdeen our heartiest congratulations in obtaining this honour. Bravo Aberdeen! We would like to offer a hand of welcome to the house parents who have joined us since our last issue, Mr. and Mrs. R. Ellis, Cairns, Mr. and Mrs. Ludbrook, Aberdeen, and Mr. and Mrs. Moore, MacAndrew, not forgetting Mrs. Darton who has joined Somerset, and Mr. Crutchley our new dining hall master. Good luck to them all. In conclusion we wish the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, their son David and his fiancée, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, and all members of the staff a very Happy Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year. God bless! J. C. J. AND E. M. J. |

House Notes
House parents:
Mr. and Mrs. Jones IN THE absence of Mr. and Mrs. Jones who have gone for a well earned holiday, I will try to write the House news with the aid of Mr. Clarke, who is looking after us at the moment. First of all, with all the banging and crashing that has been going on in the building with the renovations, may we respectfully apply for sound-proof ear muffs, and put them on. our clothing account? BOUQUETS. Well done Pelham with our two hard fought games of football, we know that Somerset had to fight hard to get three goals. Dickie Rowan's goalkeeping certainly saved a disastrous collapse in the junior match. Well done Pickie! Even the Somerset boys had to admit they were both great games. We know that many hobbies are carried on in the School, but we are very interested to know who collects bath plugs? David Marno would certainly like to know .... In the event of a fire watcher being wanted by Captain Culver, we suggest that he contacts David Pike. Also while mentioning David, we shall be looking forward to the three minute mile in track events. It's a shame that stair climbing races are not recognized in the Olympics. It is a shame that 'Shylock' Holmes and Richard Rowles are not ready to produce their comic strip, but who knows we may yet outshine a daily national paper and present 'Gasp and the Horror Strip' ! A request has come from higher authority to maintain some order with low flying aircraft from the model section; John Moore, Keith Milsom, 'Huck' Holberry and others, please note. Now that the Exhibition is over, we find a little time to look around the bays, and the following instructions must be adhered to when strangers come to see the Pelham lads. In Holberry's 'hangar', please keep your feet off the aircraft; in Paul Smith's bay it is permitted to shout to be heard above the euphonium played by Michael Wood, and now Paul has threatened us with guitar and mouthorgan; please refrain from calling the plaster models 'trashies' when you enter 'Pike's den'; with the kind permission of Richard Rowan you may be allowed in his bay with shoes off! If you can find 'Sparky', and he is not in town with Clinton and Wallace, you may be allowed in his bay, but no remarks about Burnley Football Club please, or 'Sparks will fly'. With regard to football, 'Winnie' Norton kindly wishes to thank all for the offer of crutches, but he can still walk, although he is occasionally late for breakfast. A big welcome back to Leslie Browning, who played a good game of football after having spent several weeks on the sick list. Maybe we can get a transfer to the 'Spurs' for him yet! Well done Les! Mention must also be made of the grand game played by Paul Everitt, who, despite having had his appendix removed, showed that Pelham are still and will always be 'on the ball'. Michael Massey seems to play better with chunks out of his ear, let's hope he's a champion when it gets better. With the Christmas season rushing upon us so quickly, all the boys' thoughts are of the circus and the lion tamer with his whip. In the future Pelham boys given a 'fair crack of the whip' will always be 'top of the School'. IN RETROSPECT. The following letter was published in The Sunday Times, on the 6th November, 1960.
No comment Pelhamites. In conclusion I would like to wish the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, all members of staff and boys a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year, and trust, despite their late holiday, that Mr. and Mrs. Jones will feel the benefit of their change. W. NORTON |
