Last House notes printed

House Parents: Mr. and Mrs. B. Wilson
House Captain: Neville Fletcher
Group Leader: Peter Gregory
Colours: Red and Yellow

We start our notes by saying goodbye to Chris. Berry who has gone to The Verney, Gordon Fletcher who has gone to his new job, likewise Alfred Cummings. Geoffrey Graham has returned to his land of 'milk and honey'. We wish them all the best of luck in their new spheres of life.

At this point we would also like to thank our house parents for their efforts in raising the standard of our House. Unfortunately they will not be with us much longer as they will be moving to a house in Waterford.

SWIMMING: We came out very well in the sports this year with our junior team winning the cup, and Cairns managing to pull off second place. Keith Mount did extremely well by winning the Victor Ludorum. Our relay team consisted of James Street, Peter Salkeld, and Keith Mount, and they won that event. Ray Mount did very well in the diving by winning the springboard section.

ATHLETICS: Once again our junior team stole the honours, but only just by one point from Pelham, which -perhaps makes their win all the more creditable. Ray Merrifield was just one point behind Gordon White in the Victor Ludorum. Well done Ray, even if it was not quite good enough. The junior relay team consisted of Willy Wilson, Charley Ralley, Keith Mount, and Ray Merrifield. William Wilson broke the School Duke of Edinburgh record for the long jump. Well done all of you.

BOXING: James Street, Keith Mount, and Alec Duell are representing the School in the A.B.A. Boxing championships this year. We wish them luck.

TENNIS: Congratulations to Ray Merrifield on winning the Junior tournament.

PRIZE-GIVING: I think our lads did the House proud with their efforts and the following were awarded prizes for their efforts. Paul Phillips, Freddy Workman, Roger Porter, Gordon Fletcher, Graham Scott, James Street. (See report for full details).

FILMS: We have seen some very good films this year in 'Gym. Cinema', and so far the best have been The Cracksman', a real fine comedy starring Charlie Drake, The Crimson Pirate", and The Flame and the Arrow', starring Burt Lancaster. We have also had the unusual experience of having a film made in our School, with stars Tom Bell and Judi Dench. The film is called 'He who rides a Tiger', and we are all looking forward to its release. Tom Bell was the star in The L shaped Room'.

GUY FAWKES NIGHT: We had a very good evening again this year, and our old friend Mr. Joe Lee provided a display of real big fireworks as an extra for us.

In conclusion we wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

House Parents: Mr. and Mrs. B. Wilson
House Captain: Neville Fletcher
Group Leader:
G. Fletcher, A. Cummings, P. Gregory
Colours: Red and Yellow

We start our House notes with a welcome to Melvyn Martin, Ray Mount, and William Wilson, who we hope will settle down and be happy with us.

We are all very pleased to hear that the operation on Peter Salkeld's leg has been successful, and look forward to his return in the near future.

BOXING: We did not do too well this year, but we did manage to get one trophy, for which we thank Keith Mount, who was awarded the trophy for best boxing style.

GENERAL: We are all looking forward to the Fancy Dress Ball and wonder who will be there. Did someone say 'The Beatles' ? or did they mean 'The Crawlers' !

Alfred Cummings will have to go as the invisible man, as alas, he will be in hospital for his sixth operation. Never mind Alf, maybe this will be the last one!

In conclusion we would like to wish everyone a happy Easter holiday, wherever they are.

House Parents: Mr. and Mrs. B. Wilson
House Captain:
Wilbert Workman
Group Leader:
John Walshaw, Adrian Lang, Neville Fletcher
Colours: Red and Yellow

During last term we were sorry to say goodbye to Michael Beare, and with him went our best wishes for the future, but we are happy to have W. Workman as House Captain, and we hope we are not making his job too hard. We also said goodbye to B. Giles, and B. Maple who went out to continue their trades. and also to Dougie and Willie Redpath, who have gone back to Scotland.

We welcome H. Hawkins F. Workman and K. Mount. who all seem to be settling in pretty well. On the last day of Easter term we are proud to remind you that P. Gregory took first place in the Junior cross-country. Keep it up Peter!

We do not know if it was the expectancy of Easter leave or not but about this same time our 'Top of the Form' team, C. Barry. (Senior), P. Gregory (Intermediate), C. Ralley (Junior) just would not let Aberdeen win, not even by one point, so we tied with them.

We cannot let this opportunity go by without wishing Chris. Berry good wishes in his R.S.A. examination.

For our Juniors' first attempt at cricket this season we are pleased to report that they won their match against Pelham and hope they can keep it up. The Seniors unfortunately did not do so well. Quite a few of us have been training for Wimbledon and look forward to a happy time there again this summer.

W. WORKMAN

The lads have left room for my wife and I to write a few words. We can honestly say as new House Parents, we have been made very welcome, and we would like to thank all who have helped us settle in, which includes boys as well as staff.

I have heard from many lads here how MacAndrew House fails in sports. On the big board of honour we are only mentioned once. But may I respectfully remind everyone that there has to be a loser, how would other houses gain their points if they didn't have MacAndrew to beat?

We have had some good individual efforts in the past, and look forward to some good battles in the days to come.

Here's wishing you a happy summer holiday.

It does not seem long since the winter edition of THE GOLDONIAN was published but the printers are waiting for news once again, so we will get down to the job and give them some work to do.

Since the last article we have said goodbye to Michael Churchill and Michael Hunt we wish them both the best of luck and success in their ventures.

During this period we have also welcomed four new arrivals, namely, Douglas and Willie Redpath from bonny Scotland and Clifford Naylor from Blackpool; they are all pleasant little chaps and seem to have settled down very well, especially little Willie who is always smiling. Then much more recently we have had the addition of Jeffrey Roope from Bradford and we are hoping he will settle down in the same way.

This term has seen Freddy Carman appointed House Captain and Mike Beare as Group Leader and a grand job they have done between them.

On the sports side, we have played several inter-house football games, won some and lost some, as it goes.

Quite a few of our boys entered for the Inter-House Boxing Competition; although we did not dominate, we would like to thank the boys who had the courage to have a go, they put up a good show.

Fred Carman and Barry Antonio both tried their luck in the Cadet cross country race and though not winning having a good try and of course earning some valuable house points with their efforts.

Mention must be made of Wilbert Workman, a good all round sportsman earning points with his table-tennis and in company with Gordon Rath and· Peter Gregory, at football.

On the Cadet side, we were pleased to see Neville Fletcher obtain his Drumming Certificate this should now do away with the necessity of practising on radiators, etc.; (eh, Neville?).

Also good luck to Steven Furnise, in his new role of Drum Major; you are making a good job of it Steven, keep it up. Finally and in conclusion, we wish to congratulate R. Roberts and Wilbert Workman on obtaining their Class B Certificate in Maths and English, further advancement in this field will certainly enhance your future.

We wish all boys and members of staff a happy Easter holiday.

First House Notes

House Parents: Mr. and Mrs. K. Moore
House Captain:

Group Leaders: Michael Churchhill, Reginald Jordon
Colours: Red and Yellow

It had been my pleasure to take over housemaster in a temporary capacity until the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Moore, our new house parents. Welcome! and may your stay with us be long and happy.

May I also say 'welcome!' to Adrian Lang, who has joined us complete with kilt but minus bag-pipes (Somerset take note). Also we welcome David Harbutt and Bruce Maple: we can now assure anyone contemplating a holiday in 'Zummerset' that it will be quiet. Their noise is now with us!

BOUQUETS. Robbie Roberts quietly mentioned to me that he had won the Junior Compositor's Prize in the Printing Department. Well done Robbie! Let us hope this prize will be the first of many.

Well done Harry Stringer! Your cricket and swimming for the past season has been very good. Let us hope that in the next season you will aspire to even greater heights.

At times, when the editor is 'hopping mad' at not receiving news for the magazine, the house parents are thinking over what there is to write about, but these last months have presented no problem. We in MacAndrew' have been happily endowed with one lad who is a 'natural' at all sports. I refer to Willie Workman, who, as a junior has done so well at cricket, football, and above all, tennis. With his quiet unassuming way he has won a place in the football team, the cricket team, and then he won the junior Tennis competition after a long fought battle with Eddie Budd of Pelham. Well done Wilbert! You are a credit to the House and School, the future holds lots 'of good things for you in the field of sport.

The following. boys have also made great contributions to the House, gaining points here and there for the Queens' Cup competition: Gordon and Neville Fletcher, Barry Antonio and Peter Gregory. Keep up the good work!

Now we come to the worst part of the news-farewells! Firstly to Mr. S. Aldous who left us to work elsewhere; to Barry Tyler, who has gone to a situation somewhere in the Midlands, to John Pederson who has gone to a situation in London, and to Ronnie Brown, who has also gone to London to work. Now the housemaster will not have to keep repeating 'Ronnie, where are your slippers?'. Last but not least of our departures were Terry Burns and David Still who have been restored.

We also have a potential artist in the person of Reggie Jordon, who already has had the taste of success in that he has sold his first picture! Congratulations Reg and may this be the first of many.

All members of MacAndrew take great pleasure in wishing Mr. David WheatIey every happiness in his forthcoming marriage.

Before closing may I say 'thank you' to Pelham house for the great game of cricket at the beginning of August. Sorry you didn't have it all your own way, although you eventually won a terrific game, but watch out next year, because you will need to be, I quote, 'on the, ball Pelham!'

Finally, I wish all past and present boys and staff a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

J. C.

NOTE FROM MR. AND MRS. MOORE

We have not been here very long. therefore we cannot have a great deal to say. but we would like to take this opportunity of thanking Mr. Clarke, who has been very helpful towards us indeed. Also we would like to let the boys from MacAndrew know that we are very happy to have joined them and hope they will feel the same about us, as they get to know us better. A very Happy Christmas to all the boys from MacAndrew who are going on Christmas leave and we feel sure that together with the boys who are staying here we shall be able to make our first Christmas at Goldings a very happy one.

First House Notes

House Parents: Mr. Aldous
House Captain:
Terence Whitehead
Prefect:  William Charlton
Colours:
Red and White

It is with pleasure that I write the first House Notes of the MacAndrew House since Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret graciously opened the new wing on Tuesday, 18th October, 1960.

Since forming the House after the Dymchurch holiday, we have lost a few of our original lads, viz. David Bird, Terry Parsons and Robert Smith. For our part we are sorry to lose these boys, as they all possessed many good qualities. In particular I would like to mention Terry Parsons who became a Prefect with the formation of our House, and although his tour of duty was relatively short, he turned out to be a first class prefect and liked by all. We wish all boys the very best for the future.

As you will see by the heading of these notes, Terry Whitehead has been made our House Captain, and Bill Charlton a Prefect; I feel they are both good chaps and it is up to everyone in the House to give them full support.

Terry has drawn up our teams for house football matches, and we are ready to do battle with all challengers, and by the time these notes are in print we should have claimed a few victories.

Christmas will soon be upon us and already we are thinking about decoration arrangements, it certainly does not seem a year since we were planning last Christmas's affairs. I am certain it will not .be any of the lads' faults if the first Christmas we spend together as the MacAndrew boys is not a success.

Six of the boys that have come to the School this term have joined our House, and to them we extend a real hand of welcome, and wish them every success and happiness during their stay at Goldings, and trust they will join with the rest of us in making OUR House THE House; so please take note, Daniel Black, Wilbert Workman, Frederick Carman, Michael Hunt, Gordon Fletcher and Neville Fletcher.

We also extend a warm hand of welcome to Mr. Clarke and Mr. Ring, who have joined the staff, and trust they will be very happy with us too.

In conclusion I, on behalf of all members of our House, wish Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr: and Mrs. Embleton, all staff and boys a very merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret to open the New Wing
The Goldonian Summer 1960

Princess Margaret, who is President of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, has graciously consented to open the new wing of our School (the MacAndrew wing) during the afternoon of Tuesday, 18th October, 1960. This splendid news has only just been released, but fortunately for us just in time for insertion in THE GOLDONIAN as it goes to press. No details are as Yet available, but everyone can be sure that the 18th October, 1960, will be a date never to be forgotten in the history of the School.
