House Notes
Housemaster: Mr.
Doudney We would like to welcome our new housemaster, Mr. Doudney, who took over from Mr. and Mrs. Patterson. We were very sorry to lose Mr. and Mrs. Patterson who had done so much to make Cairns a great house. When they first left us we were very lucky to have Mr. Allan and Mr. Brooks take over the duties of housemasters, and between them kept us in good shape until the arrival of Mr. Doudney. We thank them very much for their good services to us all. Our best wishes go to M. Turner, T. Hill, and B. Smith who left the school during the last term, and we hope that by now they have settled down to their new lives. In the field of sport we won the inter-house Football Cup by beating Aberdeen by one goal to nil, scored by David Dunn. It was a very close and hotly contested match. Representing Cairns in the inter-house table tennis final was David Dunne, who just managed to beat Barry Davison of Somerset house. Now that the cricket season has started we have four boys playing for· the school cricket team: Trevor Lyon, John Olbison, David Dunne, and Dennis Kayum. This should be a good pointer for inter-house cricket! Graham Scott has been on a sea training course aboard the Winston Churchill schooner, which must have been a marvellous experience. Finally, our congratulations to Gilbert Brown on his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, and next issue I hope to be able to report that he has attained his Silver. On behalf of the House I wish everyone a very happy holiday and hope that the sunny weather we are now enjoying will continue. T. LYON ************************************************** Having been called upon at very short notice to make a contribution to the GOLDONIAN after only a fortnight as Housemaster of Cairns, I feel that this message should take the form of an introduction of myself and my aims for the House and for the School generally. I trust that my House Captain will have expressed adequately the detail regarding the attainments of Cairns, with which he is at this stage far more familiar than I am. I would like to make it known how very much I appreciate the wonderful opportunity which has been afforded me by my taking up residence at Goldings, and although things seem more than a little hectic at this stage, I am confident that eventually with the continued kind help of all the other staff and with the co-operation of my team of workers (for whom nothing is too much trouble provided they have the same attitude to me) we shall together make some progress, even if only a little in the early stages. Already I am beginning to see where there is room for improvement, though I am only just becoming acquainted with the habits and personalities with which I find myself suddenly confronted after a very long uphill struggle to acquire such a position as this; I am so grateful to have the chance of putting some previously successful ideals into practice, particularly with regard to my keenness to inculcate into my House a sense of personal integrity and team spirit. I am prepared to act with the great amount of patience required to achieve this end. Seeing me writing this prompted one member to remark: 'Make it good 'cos you're writing for the Best House'. Who could doubt that already some team spirit exists, which surely should be furthered? If other Houses resent this, they might bear in mind that superlatives of this kind do not necessarily imply unique status; it is the striving to be the best which counts. LEONARD DOUDNEY |

House Notes
House parents: Mr. and
Mrs. Patterson First of all I would like, on behalf of all Cairns, to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Patterson who have replaced Mr. Clarke, who has now left the School altogether. We wish them a long and happy stay with us. Peter Howe has come out of hospital where he has been for many weeks now, and is biding his time in sickbay, much to his disapproval; we all hope that he gets fully fit very soon now. Cairns came nowhere in the Queens' Cup this term, which I think was due to no house parents, but I should say that we will do much better next year. Cairns Seniors have played two cricket matches and have lost them both, but they put up a good show in both games. Some of our boys have gone to Cartref Melys, Conway in Wales; they are: Raymond Allen, William Mcphee, Brian Smith, Thomas Hill, Robert Woodward, Frank Cooke; we all hope that they get along all right. Well there is not much more to say this term, except that I hope Cairns will do well in the coming year. JOHN ALLEN ************************************************** There is little that I can add to what has already been said so well by your acting House Captain, JOHN ALLEN, except to say a big 'Thank you' to John and the boys for the way in which they have helped my wife and I to get things running smoothly. We also appreciate the way in which most of the lads have worked to really put CAIRNS back in their rightful place, AT THE TOP. Thanks again lads and Well Done! We would also like to say a special word of thanks to the other members of the staff for the wonderful way in which they rallied round and helped us on our arrival and on every other occasion on which we have asked or needed it. We are both looking forward to a long and happy association with Goldings, the Staff and the boys. Thanks for everything. A· AND J. PATTERSON NB: After much alteration to the staff quarters the Patterson's' were gone and we were working in a new Housemaster, then with a blink of the eye he was gone too. What were Barnardo's Council doing that they could not keep their staff for more than a short term. |

House Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. J. H. Clarke The telephone is an electrical apparatus, which transmits and receives sound; this is a known fact. During this term the amplifiers in dorms and sitting rooms have been used for waking the boys in the mornings, ably assisted by 'Radio Caroline' and 'Radio London'. This has helped to keep the noise down, boys are now more concerned in listening than shouting. This also is a known fact. At the time of writing, our House Captain is still in hospital; all in Cairns wish him a speedy recovery. At last our television set is back with us and it is now possible to find Cairns boys in their own sitting room. When these notes go to press the weekly films for the winter will have finished; all the boys in Cairns wish to take this opportunity in saying 'thank you' to Mr. T. Powell and Mr. J. Taylor for giving up their Thursday evenings to show these to us. Also votes of thanks to our Disc jockey and Master of Ceremonies at the weekly dances, Mr. A. Hooper and Mr. Wilkins; also Mr. Sheppard for his hard work in arranging an Art Exhibition during one of the dances. On the 24th February a Games Evening was held in the schoolroom; this was enjoyed by all, and all the boys wish Boscoe and his little band of helpers who made the cakes for supper a very special 'thank you'. During this term, we have had a Chess Tournament. Cairns were well represented by Freddie Workman who was beaten in the Finals by James Street of Aberdeen. Never mind, Fred, better luck next time! Although a lot of hard work has been put, in on the sitting room by (the inseparables) J. Daglish and D. Gallagher, we still have a lot of points to catch up for the Queens' Cup. James Kerr is also doing a good job on the washroom and toilets. G. Scott, M. Martin, and R. Wharton still help to gather points by being in the choir. By the way, welcome back Robbie, let's hope your stay will be long and happy. Since the last notes there has been a big change over in the School: MacAndrew Wing has now been handed to the Senior House and Cairns have virtually lost J. Allen, P. Olbison, B. Smith, P. Howe and R. Daglish. The following boys have now become Printer Apprentices: M. Longman, R. Hendry, and A. Bayliss Good luck to all and best wishes for the future. On Tuesday, 9th March, the following boys were confirmed by the Bishop of St. Albans T. Lyon, J. Kerr, J. Mikkleson and S. Williams. Soon Easter mill be upon us then will come the time for frantic rushing, dashing and packing, but at the present moment the magic words of 'swimming pool' and 'Wimbledon' are being mentioned. In the future the Valley will again be in bounds and cricket will be in season, but before this takes place may we say 'well done' to the senior and junior football teams, always keeping in mind that it is not what you have done but how you have done it that counts. Our Football teams are as follows: SENIORS: J. Allen, W. Hill, R. Daglish. W. McPhee, G. Crowe, P. Olbison, J. Olbison, R. Thornton, D. Cross. JUNIORS: T. Lyon, M. Turner, D. Gallagher, J. Daglish, D. Young, R. Willbourne, G. Brown, R Wharton, M. Martin, R. Woodward, A. Duell. Earlier during this term, Billy Hill was awarded a trophy for Boxing for the Cadets. Well done Billy! On the 27th February, by kind arrangement of Mr. de' Boeck, the School were entertained to a concert by the 'Philomels' from Loughton, Essex. All in Cairns wish to say thank you to these good people. Before closing may I take this opportunity in wishing Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, all the Staff and boys a very happy Easter holiday. |

House Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. J. H. Clarke Welcome to Goldings and Cairns, Paul Talbot, from Borley near Sudbury in Suffolk, Frank Cooke from Barkingside, Gilbert Brown from Glasclune Stephen Williams (Rusty) from Clacton, and Robert Willbourne from Leigh‑on‑sea May their stay be happy and prosperous. Farewell to Tony Wright, ex House Captain, who left to take up an apprenticeship in his trade. In this fast moving world today, fast cars, moon shots and beat music are slow when compared with the way time flies at school, and again the Editor is breathing down our necks for our notes. Coming back from summer holiday we found the weeks ahead were to be very active. First we had the swimming sports, in which we came second, closely followed by the athletics in which we won the senior event and were runners‑up in the junior section. John Allen won the Victor Ludorum for the seniors. Well done. Football started very well, and our seniors have won all matches played so far, but the juniors have not been so lucky, although they have all tried very hard. Prize‑giving Day went off very well, and our Robert (Hendry) was presented with his Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. In our 'Little Wimbledon' tennis competition, David Fall did remarkably well to reach the final, but was beaten into second place by Keith McSweeney of Somerset. We are lagging behind in the continuous Queens' Cup competition, although over the last week or two we have improved, but are still too far behind to offer a real challenge to the leaders. Our sitting room has improved a lot through the hard work done by Michael Longman and Allan Bayliss, likewise the toilets which are maintained by David Gallagher and John Daglish. With the dancing season now in full swing the demand for clean shirts, hair cream and trouser pressing is very great, and Friday evenings are full of activity. Christmas 1964, is upon us, and as usual we in Cairns would like to wish everyone, near and far, a very merry Christmas, and a happy New Year. Peter Howe |

Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. J. H. Clarke The last issue of THE GOLDONIAN was in print before the Fancy Dress Dance was held on the last day of term, and what a dance it was! All the boys in Cairns wish to thank members of staff and wives who helped to make the evening such a great success. The boys of our House kept their ideas a closely guarded secret until a night or two before the great occasion, and then some of the creations which emerged from various boxes and hiding places were quite out of this world. The following list gives you some idea of the variety of subjects our boys thought up, and as will be seen some were fortunate enough to be selected for prizes. However, all are to be commended on their efforts, and as with all competitions, some win and some do not. Billy Hill, Long John Silver, complete with stump which must have been very painful, was awarded first prize; Robert Hendry, Beer Bottle, which meant that he spent part of the evening inside a cardboard tube, was awarded third prize; Billy Hicks, The New Baby, all 5 ft. 8 in. of him complete in nappy and pin, was awarded fourth prize. John Fairburn, The Drunkard; Peter Olbison, The Robot; Paull Healtd, The Hunter; Peter Heald, The Golfer; John Albison, The Chef; Malcolm Turner, The Lady Cook (with apologies to Carol); Peter Howe, The Judge; Robert Wharton, The Arab; Allan Bayliss, and Noel Mairs, Arthur Haynes and Irish; Brian Smith, The Zulu; Tommy Hill, Humpty-Dumpty; John Mikkleson, A Cook; Robert Thornton, An Old Lady; Michael Longman, The Sandwich Man. Congratulations to all of our boys, who gained for us Best House Prize.
Now that the cold weather• is leaving us and the evenings are getting longer, we can once again hear the sound of bat meeting ball, or vice versa, and the shout of pleasure or disappointment, depending whether a catch was held or dropped. We sincerely hope the weather will permit us to have a good season's cricket and that Cairns will field a good team and collect the cricket trophy at the end of the season. SWIMMING With Whitsun being so hot, we have got off to a fine start in the pool, and there is no reason why every boy in the House should not be a proficient swimmer by the end of the season. There cannot be many schools as fortunate as we are in this direction. TABLE TENNIS
Although this activity finished soon after the
last edition of THE GOLDONIAN, the hard core of the House team can still
be seen practising very hard to keep in touch ready for next season, and
LAWN TENNIS
The lads are all either playing tennis or
practising hard to. be selected as ball boys for Wimbledon again this
year. Although we have been doing this service for many years now, the
enthusiasm of boys to get to Wimbledon has in no way diminished. FOOTBALL The senior team ,howed that lunch time and spare time practice is worth whi1le, because they were successful in winning. the inter-house cup. The results werE: as follows: we beat Somerset 2-0 in the quarter final, Pelham 9-1 in the semi-final, and in the final against Pelham we reached double figures. Our team: M. Longman, P. Howe, R. Daglish, A. Wright, D. Fall, J. AlIen, M. Gay, R. Thornton, P. Olbison, W. Hill, N. Mairs. The junior team reached the semi-final of their tournament, and were perhaps a little unlucky to lose 5-4 against MacAndrew. Never mind, everyone did his best. BOXING Noel Mairs, Michael Gay, and Tommy Hill represented the School in the A.B.A. competition, and although they all lost their bouts they were in no way disgraced, and put up a very good show.
We welcome the following boys who have joined us this term, and trust their days with us will be happy and the training the School gives them will be a great asset. John Daglish, David Cross, Trevor Lyons, Dennis Young, David Gallagher, David Dunne, Raymond AlIen.
Old friends leave us to go out into the world to stand on their own feet and make new friends, and this term we have said goodbye to the following boys, wishing them success in whatever course they follow: John Perry, Noel Mairs, Billy Hicks, and Raymond Scrutton.
In conclusion I would like to wish everyone a
very happy summer holiday, with lots of sunshine to cheer you up before
getting ready for the winter again (terrible thought).

Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. J. H. Clarke We start these notes by welcoming two new boys, A. Fairminer from The Village, and .T. Mikkelson from Woodford Bridge. We hope they settle in well. We are sorry to say goodbye to T. Stevens, by the time these notes are printed M. Crowe and B. Hicks will have left us. We hope that all do well in the outside world. Also Mr. and Mrs. Tate will have left, and we are all sorry to see them go, and thank them for all they have done for Cairns. We finished second in the Queens' Cup competition by a margin of four points last term. We are again doing well with the Dormitory inspection and are in fact lying second behind Somerset. Boxing is the only sports event this term. All the boys who entered boxed magnificently and Cairns obtained the Senior Cup. The competitors were: A. Wright, N. Mairs, M. Gray, B. Hill, M. Longman, P. Howe, A. Bayliss, D. Norman, P. Olbison. Juniors: T. Hill, R. Wharton, R. Thornton, J. Fairbairn, Paul Temple, G. Crowe. Football this season is proving fairly successful at the moment. We have lost only one match against Aberdeen, 7- 5. We hope to carry on and win the cup. A. Wright, D. Fall, J. AlIen are playing in the senior 'A' football team. Table tennis has just started and we have played two games so far and won both. We beat McAndrew 9 - 0 which proved an easy victory, and Aberdeen 5 - 4 which proved an exciting match right to the last game. Our team is D. Fall, A. Wright, P. Howe. D. Fall has also been playing for the School second team. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, and all members of staff a peaceful Easter holiday. ANTHONY WRIGHT |

Notes
House Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Tate This term Cairns House has moved up since last term and we are at present in second place for the Queens' Cup and keeping up a fairly good average in the inspections. During this term we have said goodbye to four boys during recent weeks: John Craig, Rammit Mairs, Robert Backhurst and Derek Hutt who have gone out to various situations. We welcome two new boys: J. Wood, and R. Scrutten. Welcome to Goldings and Cairns. The sitting room has recently been decorated and is a great improvement thanks especially to Peter Howe ,and Michael Crowe. Five boys have taken R.S.A. The boys who took maths were Tony Wright, William Collinson and Peter Howe. The boys who took English were David Fall and William Wildman we wish them much success.
SPORT: The House would like to thank J.
Mason and W. Hoy for all they have done in the cricket and football world
and we would like to congratulate W. Collinson on receiving his N.C.O.
certificate. A. WRIGHT, S. HILL, W. COLLINSON ************************************************** Well done boys, but thinking of sport let us not forget the verse always quoted at the Olympic Games, 'when the one great scorer comes to write against your name, He'll ask not how you won or lost, but how you played the game?' Playing the game is far more important than winning. At the time of writing the notes we are continuing with the fine spell, and we are now taking the opportunity of wishing a happy holiday to all members of the staff and the boys and also hope Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley have benefited by their holiday. Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. and
Mrs. R. W. ElIis
We end this term with very little success but with the new term coming up we hope to see more boys trying to help Cairns to come to the top. Congratulations to G. Parry and W. Collinson in obtaining their 'A' certificate at school, and good luck to W. Wildman, A. Wright, and W. Collinson who have just sat their R.S.A. examination. Since writing our last notes four of our boys have left us, Ralph Purdy, Keith Dryland, Keith Elkins, and Barry King we wish them the very best of luck for their future. We welcome six new boys to the house: B. Smith, W. Hicks, P. Olbison, R. Hendry, R. Daglish, and T. Hill. (Tommy Hill is the youngest member of the Hill brothers, we now have four, the senior brother George has this term been promoted to group leader, let us hope the other brothers follow in George's footsteps.) One of the new boys, W. Hicks, must be congratulated on the way he looks after the Cairns Aberdeen toilets. Good work Billy! keep it up! This term has meant promotion for one of our group leaders, namely Billy Hoy. He has risen in the ranks from group leader to House Captain, a little more responsibility perhaps but also a little extra money in his pocket each week; let us hope he is as good a House Captain as he is a sportsman. Glyn Parry, another good sportsman, has been made a group leader this term and is very proud of the fact that his dormitory has been top dormitory for Cairns more often than any other. Sport One of our greatest successes this term was the gaining by Dennis Priest of his first class certificate for gymnastics. This feat has only been equalled once in the history of the School. A very good show Dennis, we are all proud of you. BOXING: For the third year running Glyn Parry won the Boxer of the Year Trophy. Well done, Glyn! We were very pleased to see our juniors win the Junior Boxing Trophy, the boys in the team were: A. Wright, B. Hill, T. Hill, W. Hicks, R. Hendry, T. Stevens, J. Perry, and W. Wildman. FOOTBALL: These senior boys are in the school football team: W. Hoy, J. Mason, G. Parry; let's hope we have a few more by next season. TABLE-TENNIS: Congratulations to Aberdeen for winning both senior and junior cups, you certainly had a good team, but I think Cairns with its up and coming talent will make a good show next year. CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING: Cairns boys played their part in helping to win both the senior and junior Cadet Cross Country Cups, the boys who took part were G. Parry, W. Hoy, W. Collinson, J. Perry, and T. Stevens. * * * * * The Easter holidays will soon be here. Quite a number of the boys are looking forward to going on leave. Let us hope the weather is a little warmer so that not only those on leave but also the boys staying behind can get out into the sunshine and enjoy themselves. A Happy Easter to Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, the staff, and all the boys. R. W. E. AND P. M. E. |

House
Notes
Housemaster:
Mr.
and Mrs. R. W. Ellis The House came under new supervision from 1st August when Mr. and Mrs. Ellis arrived to take over. When the boys arrived back from leave and camp they found all dormitory floors covered by lino tiles, a big improvement on the old wooden floors. Each boy now has a modern wooden bed with a Dunlopillo mattress. (No wonder some boys are loath to get up in the mornings!) We are told that the standard of the House has improved and this is due largely to the boys' efforts, although we still, like any other house, have our quota of 'dodgers'. Whilst on the subject of dormitories we should like to congratulate Pelham on winning the Queens' Cup. You certainly set a high standard Pelham, but we are very close on your tail now. Old boys would not recognize the dining hall these days. Tables are now laid with gaily coloured tablecloths and in addition many other improvements have been made. Most of the boys welcome the better standards although there is Always the odd 'Goon' who does not like improvements. We offer our congratulations to the following boys:
Dennis Priest.-Second
Class Certificate for Gymnastics. He is the sixth boy to win this award in
the School's history. Well done Dennis! We look forward to you obtaining
your first class. We hope the next colours award will include both your names for cricket and football to give you both double honours. William Wildman.-Colours for swimming. Well done! You have achieved this honour rather younger than most. In addition many others have obtained certificates for swimming, life saving, and gymnastics. These also deserve our congratulations. During this term we have said goodbye to Kenneth Ambrose, our House Captain. He has visited Goldings. a few times since leaving and we are pleased to say he is doing very well at his job and is very happy in his new 'digs'. Kenneth Brown and Freddie Richardson have also left us. May we wish them all good fortune for their future. Five more boys have arrived during- this term, Terence Stevens, David Norman, Michael Crowe, John Perry, and Billy Hill. Welcome to Goldings and 'Cairns'. We hear that the 'Going Down' concert is progressing well. May we express our thanks and appreciation to members of staff, their wives, and the boys taking part for all the hard work they are putting into the show. Needless to say WB are all looking forward to the show. Christmas will soon be with us and most of the boys are looking forward to going away for their Christmas holidays. We who are staying behind wish them all a very Happy Christmas and the best of everything. The boys who are staying at Goldings for Christmas have no need to feel down-hearted as we understand they are very well provided for and in most cases have as good, if not better time than some of those who go on leave. In conclusion may we wish Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, all members of staff and the boys a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous and successful New Year. R. W. E. AND P. M. E. |

House
Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. D. Walder The Headmaster recently suggested that the boys and myself should choose dormitory names to replace the informal sound of first, second Cairns, and so on. After a lot of debating we finally settled on Tedder, Montgomery, Alexander, and Mountbatten. This term we have started a new competition for the 'Best House of the Term' with an award of the Queens' Cup at the end of each term. At the moment of writing we are second with 109 points, 1 point behind Pelham, who are at the top. Marks are awarded for dormitory inspection to the first and second houses, for good work, and behaviour in shops and school, but points are deducted for certain offences. I think this system gives a chance for a boy who is good in his trade or learning to do his own bit for his house. I hope that all the boys in Cairns will do their best for the House. D. Walder |

House
Notes
Housemaster:
Mr. D. Walder Having returned from our Dymchurch holiday, we found that the new house system, which up to now had only been discussed and planned round the table, was put into action. One evening after tea the move began, and after a great deal of planning, moving and hard work by the boys and staff, the housemasters found themselves with a different family, a set of juniors and seniors, a chance now for new ideas and plans. Reconstruction of the School has already begun in the shape of Somerset's new sitting room. In time to come we will all have the 'new look' in our houses. In Cairns the carpenters have made a start on the sitting room, but as we know these things take time, and we must be patient. We have been allocated new beds, chairs and bedside rugs for Second Cairns, which has given the 'old place' quite a face lift. As time progresses we will eventually become a self-contained house, with every modern convenience. We were sorry to say goodbye to G. Forster and D. Lee this term, who, having gamed apprenticeships, have moved to the Verney, and we wish them all the very best in their new life and trade. Three new boys have joined our family, W. Wildman, A. Wright, and N. Mairs. The latter joins his brothers already with us .. Roy Morgan has now become our House Captain, and Peter Beresford a Prefect. We hope that they will do their utmost to keep Cairns on the top, or as near as possible anyway. In writing of Cairns boys' individual successes which I know in the eyes of Aberdeen are not very many!-Michael Justice is the outstanding personality. He has gained his Bronze Medalion and Cross for Life Saving, also the Victor Ludorum, as well as two School Certificates. He has put up an excellent show in School sports this year. Well done Michael! Unfortunately we have not been blessed with many sportsmen in our House, especially on the football side, but the sportsmanship is shown when we do our best, win or lose, and nevertheless enjoy ourselves." On the occasion of the Royal Visit, when Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret opened the new MacAndrew Wing; two Cairns boys were given the honour of meeting the Princess, and had the great opportunity of speaking to her. Peter Beresford, who met her in the capacity of a senior boy of the House, being able to converse, if asked, of many of the activities in which he has taken a personal interest while he has been with us. Derek Hutt, who was on the hobbies" stand, was also asked questions concerning the exhibits which were on display. Both of these lads I feel sure will not forget their brief meeting with Princess Margaret for a long time. Referring to Morning Dormitory Inspections, we are doing our best to overcome many difficulties, overcrowding and the tedious effort of continual clearing-up while alterations are in progress. The reason for my mentioning this, is to put a good word in for Cairns boys, who continue the good work, despite the drawbacks and only having one broom and bumper. In conclusion, these being my first House Notes, and by rereading the last! would like to extend Christmas Greetings to the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, and all members of staff on behalf of us all in Cairns. D. W. |
