Cairns House 1934 to 1954

House Notes

The Goldonian Winter 1953

HOUSEMASTERS: Mr. Warren
HOUSE CAPTAIN: A. J. Willson
HOUSE PREFECTS:
V. King, G. Kemp and G. Smith
Colours: Red and Black

This is the first time I have had the pleasure of writing these notes for the house. Since the last edition of THE GOLDONIAN the house has seen a number of changes.

First, I must say that our new housemaster, Mr. Warren, who is also Somerset's housemaster, has settled down to his job and gets on quite well with the boys. Secondly, I must welcome three new Prefects, V. King, G. Kemp and G. Smith, who so far have done their jobs very well.

The house lost a good prefect in D. J. Smith, who has left for a situation as a gardener. D. Ellis has also left for a job as a boat builder at Stanstead Abbotts.

At football Cairns have done quite well so far, beating Somerset in their first match, 9-1. We have a number of the Minor team players, and a couple of the "A" team players in the house team.

I will finish by wishing Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Corbett and the rest of the staff a Very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years.

House Captain A. J. Willson

The Goldonian Summer 1953

HOUSEMASTERS: Mr. Leslie Warren
HOUSE CAPTAIN:
A. Blackburn
HOUSE PREFECTS:
A. Wilson, D. Walker, G. Smith.
Colours: Red and Black

Once again we come to the time when we have to write our house notes. We consider ourselves top house now as far as sport is concerned. We have won the Football, Cross-Country, and Athletics and we will soon know whether we have won the Cricket Cup.

We welcome Mr. Leslie Warren, who is taking up a post as a House Master but we do not know whether he will be looking after the top house ("Cairns") or one of the other houses.

We welcome new boys from the junior houses, V. King, M. Munson, J. Lloyd and G. Gray. We shall soon be considering making up some more prefects as we shall soon be losing H / C Alan Blackburn, better known as "Blackie", and D. Walker better known as "Whacker". We are very sorry to lose "Blackie" as he has accomplished a marvellous task in bringing us up to the top of the realm. He has played centre forward for his county several times and has also had a couple of games for West Ham Football Club. One of our Prefects, A. J. Willson, won the Victor Ludorum for the intermediates and honour for himself. (see below)

We would like to give a vote of thanks to Mr. Culver for all the good work he has done for the school. And also Mr. Corbett who comes up regularly every morning to give a helping hand and we appreciate it very much.

This term has been rather broken up with Wimbledon and other various activities. We all enjoyed the Coronation Festivities "(It poured with rain)"

We have lost six good boys from this house-four of them have taken up their apprenticeship:- Wilfred Eeles, James Cunningham, Roy Addinall and Charles Piper, also William Hunt and David Boddy. The last two have taken up their situations in the outside world.

We would like to thank the school-teachers for their help at Wimbledon. We would also like to wish the Headmaster and family and all the staff a happy and enjoyable holiday. And for those who are going to Dymchurch "Don't forget your umbrellas"

We welcome Miss Mary Underwood to the sick bay and we thank her for the good work she is doing both for the school and the boys in general.

Lastly, we thank Mr. Brown the Sports Master for his work in looking after the courts and the equipment.

HOUSE CAPTAIN:
A. Blackburn
HOUSE PREFECTS:
A. Wilson, D. Walker, G. Smith.

I should like to congratulate all Cairns boys, on having done so well at sport this term. At football we were second from bottom but have pulled up very well and are now top. We have only one more game to play and cannot be beaten in the League.

As I write these notes the inter-house boxing is about to begin again. Last year we won the boxing and have a good chance of doing so again this year. We have got a good entry, nearly everyone having entered.

We have lost many good boys since last term. We were very sorry to lose House Captain W. Ostle, and prefects R. Boswell, C. Mogford and M. Warren. I know you would all like to wish them the best of luck in their careers. We still see a lot of W. Ostle who comes down to play football for the school each Saturday. I am sure you would all like to congratulate A. Wilson on obtaining the rank of a fully fledged prefect, also D. Walker and G. Smith.

I should like to welcome all our new boys who have come up from the junior houses. We hope they will keep up the good reputation and tradition of the house.

On behalf of all boys I should like to thank Mr. Culver very warmly for having taken over as our house master as he had also Somerset house to look after.

We warmly congratulate M. Jarvis on having taken the place of A. Aldwinckle as School Captain and I hope he will carry on the good work.

I finish up by wishing all the boys and members of Staff a very happy Easter. Also Mr. Corbett and Mr. Wheatley and his family a happy holiday.

Since the last issue of THE Goldonian the House has done quite well in the way of sports. In the Athletics the House secured the second position, with Mt. Stephen on top. At the Swimming Sports we didn't do quite so well, but came in third. Jolly good try!

During the term we have said good  - bye to a number of our boys: Ratcliffe, W. Davidson, and in the last few days Parkes, who just before he left had the honour of holding the Silver Bugle, now a new competition in the School.

The Second Eleven Cricket League and Cup. By the time these notes go to press, we hope that the senior eleven will have done equally well.

We congratulate Morgan on winning the Victor Ludorum medal in the Athletics. It is the second year in succession.

On 9th July the Annual Prize giving Day was held, and a good number of Cairns boys won prizes: R. Hindmarsh, R. Howitt, Payne 52 and D. Morgan. Well done!

Now that the summer holidays have come along once more we all wish that everybody in the School will have a pleasant holiday whether at Dymchurch or at their own homes. We all hope that the staff will enjoy theirs as much as we shall.

The Goldonian Spring 1949

HOUSEMASTERS:- Mr. G. White. Mr. H. Tempest, Mr. J. E. Bishop, Mr. G. Fogg.
HOUSE CAPTAIN: A. B. Johnson.
HOUSE PREFECTS:- L. Boddy, R. Howitt, M. Hobday.
Colours: Red and Black

Since the last issue of the GOLDONIAN, we have said goodbye to two of our boys, Norman Culliford, and Prefect R. Moss who were very popular with the house. We wish them every success in their new life in the "outside" world.

We welcome to Cairns House, lan Sangster and Raymond Boswell, who came to Goldings from W.N.T.S., and hope they like their new surroundings.

In foobtall, Cairns fought their way into the Cup semi-final and a very good game, including extra time, ended in a draw of 1—1 after Kessack scored from a pass by Baggaridge. Our opponents. Somerset House the League leaders, won the replay by 2 goals to 1, Morgan scoring for Cairns this time. In the League, we hold fourth position. A word of congratulation must be given to Prefect Howitt on his excellent goal-keeping, for he has saved many shots that looked certain goals, and our position in the League is very largely due to his good play.

Our Junior XI are still heading the Junior League table having won every game, their goal average now being 143 for and 10 against. They have, also, great hopes of winning the Junior Cup Final. At the time of writing Cairns hold top position in the inter-house Billiards competition, thanks to our four successful players, Walker, Baggaridge, McLean and S. Dean. Keep it up, boys!

After a lapse of many months Cairns have at last succeeded in winning a Good Conduct Supper again. This was mostly due to the boy's who gained special mention in school work. Well done, those boys! The standard of conduct is steadily rising but there is still plenty of room for improvement. On behalf of all in Cairns House, I send greetings to all Old Boys, at home or abroad.

E. C. Kessack

The Goldonian Summer 1948

House Masters: Mr. White, Mr. Tempest, Mr. Bishop, Mr. Fogg
House Captain: A. B. Johnson
House Prefects: Culliford Moss, Howitt
Colours: Red and Black

Since the last issue of The Goldonian we have had a new House Master We welcome Mr. Fogg and hope that we shall prove a satisfactory House for him.

Rackcliffe has left us for a situation and we wish him every success. He won his colours for boxing and did very well at cricket as a bowler.

Cairns congratulate Morgan on becoming Intermediate Victor Ludorum in the Inter-House Athletics and we hope he will do equally well next year. Thanks are due to all boys who took part and did their best for the House. We did well in the tug-of-war, defeating Aberdeen and Somerset in the first rounds, but losing to Buxton after a very hard pull in the final. We were runners-up to Somerset, who won the -Athletics Championship.

Cairns have entered a large number of candidates for the swimming sports. We shall know the results by the time these notes are in print and we wish our boys the best of luck.

The dormitory was not looking at its best until Open Day when, after a good "pep talk" by the Headmaster, everyone set to with a will and the floor was so finely polished you could see your face in it. Let us endeavour to keep it like that in future. It would be very pleasing to earn another House supper for good conduct. It is a long time since we were at the top of the list.

Our best wishes to all Cairns boys, past and present.

House Captain Johnson Brown 42

House Master Mr. A. E. Brooks

Many changes have been seen since last The Goldonian was issued. Although throughout Goldings the loss of our dear friend Mr. Battell was deplored, none could have felt the blow harder than Cairns House boys, for whose welfare he toiled. As we read these notes let us remember him for indeed it was a "short life well spent.”

To the newcomers to Cairns ranks let us extend a hearty welcome and trust they will display a keen interest in House affairs and get the very best out of life at Goldings.

Cricket: Once again we excelled at Cricket retaining the Cricket Cup and League Championship

Swimming: Here again we did well retaining this Trophy.

Football: 1939 – 40 the Inter‑House Football League we could do no better than finish sixth in the 1st  XI and wooden spoonists in the 2nd XL We are pleased to record that this season to date the 1st XI is on top of the world by virtue of a good win over Mount Stephen in November, when their defence was penetrated for the first time. Whilst on football our best wishes go out to Beaton and Wilsdon, who have recently left us. Both were useful 1st XI players.

Athletics: Here we had to submit to a defeat, Mount Stephen proving easy winners of the Shield, with Cairns second. Better luck next time.

Boxing: Whilst we did nothing of note as pugilists, taking the field of sport as a whole, we had quite a successful season.

Good Conduct:  A little more effort is required from certain members to steer clear of Black Marks. Look to it and let's give a good account of ourselves.

Congratulations to the brothers Smith, Cook and Brown on their recent promotion to Prefectship.  And now in conclusion, to all Cairns boys who have left in the Past year we extend the very best of good wishes.
