Buxton House notes
 Winter 1953

It gives me great pleasure in writing the house notes for Buxton.

Buxton is not so good for sport this year as it was last year. In football we have played three games but only won one. We have got one Junior "A" player and quite a few entered for the junior trials. We hope to have a lot of entries for this year's Boxing.

Buxton wish all the staff and boys of the school a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

As new Monitor it gives me the greatest pleasure to write these notes. Since Easter we have had four new boys in Buxton. They are P. Hampton, J. Fleming, C. Cummings and M. Hopcroft. Three boys are now seniors, G. Ferris, Monitor, M. Munson and J. Richards.

We thank Mr. Culver very much for the help he has given us as there are no house masters.

We won the Cup for the Cross-Country and in the Inter-House Sports we were runners-up. We are- all sorry that Mr. Patch has to leave in December.

From all Buxton House we wish Mr. Wheatley, Mr. Corbett and Staff a happy holiday.

Monitors K. Brierly and R. Mitchell.

We are greatly pleased to be able to write this note for the house, Buxton. We hope our previous monitors Barnes and Marston have a successful time in the seniors.

We have welcomed this term to our house, V. Wood, M. Jones, L. .Beckley, S. Giboon, and P. Darling who has gone into the seniors.

We hope all the boys who went down to the senior houses a very successful time. We welcome M. Munson from Kinnaird and lose T. AlIen who is now a monitor in Kinnaird.

At football we came second in the league; Pelham knocked our house out of the cup.

The monitors of Buxton wish all their boys and Mr. Leason a happy Easter.

K. Brierly, G. Ferris.

Buxton House notes
Summer 1950

Since the summer issue of this magazine several boys have left whilst others have joined our House.

We have said "au-revair" to. House-Captain Stacey, Prefect David O'Brien, Prefect Keith Stephenson, and Eoin McCaffry. These boys are now living in Ilford, Warwick, Ipswich and BallywaIter, Co Down, Northern Ireland respectively. We are pleased to. hear that Eoin McCaffry and David O'Brien are both doing well at their jobs.

We welcome Eric Goodyer, Brian Cooper, William Smith and Reginald Bryan Steadman who we expect to. uphold the high level of both discipline and sportsmanship aimed at and enjoyed by Buxton.

Prefects newly appointed are John, Dunstan and Kenneth Stephenson.

We are happy to. record continued progress in the field of sport. In this connection it is worthy to note that at the time of going to press both our 1st and 2nd XI football teams competing in the Inter-House Football League have won all their matches.

We regard it a great privilege that so many bays from our House were selected to. attend the Pinewood Studios, for the shooting of the film entitled "The, Browning Version." In addition to. visiting the Pinewood Studios, one day early in September Mr. R. F. Leason took a party of over thirty boys from various Houses to. St. Cross Hospital, Winchester, for the shooting of a scene depicting the bays going into the School Chapel for service. In this scene the famous actor Michael Redgrave, who. plays the part of a science master, was seen amongst. other masters going into Chapel in academic gown and M.A. hood of Oxford University. On this occasion Mr. Leason was asked by the well known film producer Mr. Anthony Asquith, to convey to all of us his very great appreciation for the admirable way we all followed his instructions and for our excellent behaviour. In another' scene our boys formed the school cricket team and needless to say they were all thrilled to have their photographs taken with Jean Kent. Many boys obtained autographs from Michael Redgrave, Jean Kent, Nigel Patrick, Linda Trevors and others.

Our congratulations are extended to John Dunstan and Kenneth Stephenson on becoming indentured Printing Apprentices at the school and we wish them every success in their studies.

It is nice to see Patrick Riches roaming around in the grounds and we hope he will soon be discharged from Sick Bay.

By the time these notes are circulated, the Festive season will almost be upon us, and as usual, some boys will be fortunate enough to spend Christmas with their relatives and friends, whilst others will undoubtedly enjoy themselves here, but wherever they may be, I wish them a very happy time. In conclusion, all Buxton boys join me in extending very best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Wheatley and family, the Reverend and Mrs. S. C. Corbett and family, Mr. R. F. Leason, and to our Associate Housemasters, Messrs. Riley, Penny and Howell for a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

L. Mott, House Captain.

Buxton House notes
Summer 1948

House Masters: Mr. W. H. Riley, Mr. G. Penny, Mr. C. Howell
House Captain: D. W. Green
House Prefects: P. McCarthy, M. Snowden, E. Watts

During the School Term we have said farewell to Prefects V. Montgomery to H. M. Forces and N. Woodcock to civilian employment; also to Davison. E. Watts has been made Prefect.

We are pleased to welcome David O'Brien to our House, and hope he will do us credit.

The Inter‑House Athletic Competition was held on Wednesday, 19th May, in perfect weather. Buxton tied with McCall for fourth place. We were successful in the tug-of-war, beating Cairns by two pulls to none. This was our third successive appearance in the final. Well done, all boys who entered.

The Cross‑Country Race was held on the following morning. In this contest we hid a little more success, finishing a good second to Somerset. Buxton's first six home were D. Green, N. Webb, A. Bradshaw, N. Woodcock, L. Mott and S. Fitzwater. Special praise is due to Fitzwater, who is comparatively new to the School.

Cricket is going quite well. The First Eleven have not yet lost a League match, but were defeated by Somerset in the Knock - out semi‑final. Our Second Eleven have lost one League match by one run!

In all probability this will be my last House Notes contribution and I should like to say how pleasant my time has been in Buxton, especially my nineteen months as House Captain. I still think Buxton is the best House in the School. Don't you all agree?

Buxton could get only fifth place in the Swimming Sports, though the few boys representing the House in the finals did valiantly. In particular, W. Turnbull, the only boy in the School to attempt the Open Back Lift and Dive; J. Baxter, who collected a good share of our points; and J. Mainprize, who repeated his last year's performance of doing the Longest Under-water Swim. Others gaining us points were E. Watts R. Horton, J. Goodyear, P. Addinall and L. Mott.

Buxtonians wish everyone a pleasant summer holiday; whether it be spent at Dymchurch or with friends and relatives; and hope you all will return to tackle the winter term with zest.

 D. W. GREEN.
