House Notes
The Goldonian Spring 1967

House Parent: Mr. R. Bellamy
House Captain:
Terry Reed
Colours: Black and White

It is a rather unique position I hold as I write these notes, this the fact that these will be my first and last notes for the GOLDONIAN, also joining the staff at Goldings and becoming redundant in the short space of four months.

September saw the departure of Mr. and Mrs. Batstone who left to take a position in Ceylon; I feel sure that the School with the house will join in wishing them every best wish in their new venture. The gift of a tray and wine glasses was presented to them on behalf of the house before they left.

It is difficult to mention all the boys who have left since the announcement of the closure of the School, the latest, however, are John Street and George Markham who have now taken up employment near their respective homes.

In the field of sport the house still maintains its usual high standard, several members from Cairns who joined us towards the end of last year further this.

The School sports which took place in August saw a rather disappointing effort by the house, the Juniors only managed to obtain one point, the honour for this achievement goes to Roy Grundy; mention, however, must be made of T. Reed, who won the Victor Ludorum for the highest individual score and brought the Seniors into second place.

The juniors, however, made up for their athletic failures and in the Swimming Sports won the Junior cup. P. Green tied for the junior Victor Ludorum. J. Mikkleson was chosen to represent Hertford Army Cadets in a regional swimming gala and managed to secure second place in the breaststroke.

The house is well represented in School sports and has members in the football, basketball, table tennis, and five‑a‑side teams; the inter‑house football competition ended with the final between Aberdeen and Somerset, this proving a most exciting game with the result four goals to one. The house team was most ably supported by the less sporting members and with a little persuasion helped to shout the house to victory.

The inter‑house quiz made a most enjoyable evening, after being somewhat outclassed by Somerset, the house, represented by J. Morgan, T. Reed and J. Street, managed to be placed second.

G. Leivers leaves for a Mediterranean cruise at Easter and will be visiting Venice, Gibralter, Malta, Istanbul, and Athens; our best wishes go to George with a hope that he has a most enjoyable trip. Rumours that J. Eagle was en route to visit Mr. and Mrs. Batstone in Ceylon when sighted on a raft down the river are quite unfounded.

Since the return to school in September, the House has had its share of accidents, and at one stage we had two boys on crutches and three with arms in slings; these, however, have all been nursed back to health, and the House can almost claim to be 100 percent fit. G. Froggatt, whose accident was reported in the last edition of the GOLDONIAN, has now had his final operation on the offending arm, with the removal of a metal screw. This screw he still has, and will, for a small charge, arrange private viewings.

The loss by the House of the Queens' Cup last term means extra effort for the remaining few months, whether it be in shop, school. Sport or House, it can be done, so good luck and keep trying.

WE WISH to record our best wishes to the following boys who have left us since January of this year: D. Halifax, .Jimmy Street, M. Shinkins, M. Camel! (whose stay was short), J. Murray, P. Hircock, A. Sibbons, H. Phelps, S . Haines, and J. Coombes.

A warm welcome is extended to the newcomers, P. Grigor. L. Hultum, A. Graham,. R. Grundy, J. Eagle, R. Ritchie,. P. Green, M. Walker, and G. Froggatt, who did not get on very well with his 'Pit boots', and at the time of writing still has an arm in plaster to remind him of the time they let him down rather heavily! Most of these boys have settled down with us and are making their contribution to the House.

Early in the year the 'Flu Bug' hit the School, many Aberdeen boys were among the first victims, but thanks to Nurse and her helpers they soon shook it off. It was a bit hectic while it lasted and rather strange how the symptoms varied according to the boy's desires!

The House has some keen and talented sportsmen, who have taken part and done well in many sports, football being the most popular. Several of our boys played in the School team, Jimmy Street, D. Halifax, T. Reed, G. Tovey, J. Murray, and P Grigor, they proved themselves worthy of their places. There are many younger Boys who show great promise for the future. The House final between Cairns and Aberdeen was an excellent game, played with a good spirit; final score, Cairns one, Aberdeen nil, a very close game.

Five-a-side football was another good game played during the winter evenings; the School side reached the final with the help of two of our boys, T. Reed and P. Grigor. G. Tovey and T. Reed were in the School team for basketball and the team were runners-up in the league, a good effort.

Table tennis was enjoyed by many boys during the winter months, R. Smith reached the semi-finals for the seniors and T. Reed reached the semi-finals· for the juniors.

Some good efforts were made in the School cross country race, T. Reed finished third for the seniors and G. Leivers third for the juniors. K. Rose' deserves a mention for his fine effort. This is the race where the non-smokers benefit!

The inter-House Quiz was an enjoyable evening, which Aberdeen won. G. Leivers, John Street, and J. Murray, who was excellent, competed for the House.

Paul Grigor and R. Grundy enjoyed their stay at Cartref Melys, Conway, we hope that more boys will be able to go and enjoy this wonderful opportunity of outdoor life in Wales. Many boys have been camping during the week-ends, either with the Scouts or for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme; they seem to have enjoyed it.

It is good to see that the Cadet Band has taken a new lease of life recently, some of our Aberdeen boys have helped to renew its life, and some effort and enthusiasm is being put into the Band's marching and playing.

At the time of writing inter-House cricket matches have started, Aberdeen have beaten Pelham by 44 runs. R. Smith had a good innings with 40, the next best was G. Tovey with 15. Pelham's wickets were taken by R. Smith (4), T. Reed (4), and John Street (2).

The Easter term finished with Aberdeen being runners-up to Cairns for the Queens' Cup. Every point counts, so let's sec what can be done this term, it's the effort of us all that is needed, whether it be in sport, school, shop, or in the House itself. Good luck and keep trying.

Although we are now in the cricket season, I wish to start these notes with the results of the Soccer inter-house finals.

Both Aberdeen Junior and Senior teams made the final and both teams drew their final games, Juniors v. Somerset went to extra time and was then decided on penalty kicks, which saw the Cup going to Somerset.

The Senior game against Pelham also ended in a draw and the Captains decided to share the Cup.

To all the boys who played these two matches in miserable weather: WELL DONE!

We were lucky to have J. Murray, M. Tilbury, and J. Street, as a team for the annual 'Top of the Form' contest which we won by I point from Somerset.

In another field we also did well in that Clifford Bean won the fancy dress prize with a very good take-off of Miss England, which together with the other entrants meant we won a box of biscuits for the best overall turnout.

We have been very sorry to see the following boys leave Aberdeen: David Ennis, Roy Lawry, Patrick Forsey, Brian Stockton, Ray Bowden, Michael Linnell, John Bartlett, Keith Bishop, who have taken up situations, and finally Roger Coppin who has just started his Printing apprenticeship. We wish all these boys well and hope to hear from them occasionally.

On the other hand we are glad to welcome the following boys to the House: Geoffrey Harrington, Stephen Haines, lan Horrel!. We hope you enjoy your stay with us.

Although it is very early yet to know if we are to win any cricket cups we have played a few games, vis.: v. Cairns (Juniors), 65 for 6-36; v. Pelham (Seniors), won by Pelham by 5 runs after a very exciting finish; v. Cairns (Seniors). easily won by Aberdeen.

It is extremely hard to pick and choose particular boys who excel in this game, as from what I have seen of both teams playing every one is keen even though they may lack the polish, but on the bowling side the following boys have turned in some good figures: R. Smith, D. Tate, G. Tovey, T. Reed, Street brothers, and J. Murray. On the batting side I think the honours are even. I hope by the next time we go to press we will have a full season of cricket to write about.

At the time of writing we are in the throes of preparing for Wimbledon and sixteen Aberdeen boys have so far been selected.

We still have a contingent of boys in the Cadet Band, but their numbers are falling; perhaps we shall see them rise next term.

At present Aberdeen are lying third in the Queens' Cup competition, but we can always hope to do better next term.

This term saw the start of the Outward Bound training school at Cartref Melys, Conway and we sent R. Carlyon on the first course. To date we know nothing about his experiences but I expect he will be full of tales when he returns.

Many boys will follow him and have the chance of mountain climbing, canoeing, cycling, etc., and I hope that the next course includes more Aberdeen boys.

In closing I wish all the boys and Staff a very good and enjoyable summer holiday. All Aberdeen boys are scheduled. to go on leave and we are looking forward to the beginning of next term when we are all together again.

Since the last issue of THE GOLDONIAN many changes have taken place, resulting in Aberdeen absorbing five boys from the old MacAndrew house, namely John Street, Jimmy Street, Lawrence Martin, Robert Narn, Roy Lawrey, together with a new boy, John Bartlett, whom we hope will have a happy. stay with us.

We have also said goodbye to the following: Robert Buxton and Eric Wilmore, who left us to start work; Martin Masterson Andrews, apprenticed to Printers; Roger Arnold, Harold Johnston, and Michael Wade, restored. We wish them all well.

Jimmy Street did well in winning the Senior Chess Tournament and we had Graham Tovey and Terry Reed in the final of the Junior Tournament.

Jackie Murray won the Junior Tabl1e-Tennis Tournament, but we had no luck with the senior event although our senior boys did their best.

In the race for the Queens' Cup we are not doing so well, but we always have next term to recover our breath and try to better.

During this term We had David Halifax selected for an Outward Bound course connected with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

At the moment both the Senior and Junior football teams are in their respective finals and we hope we can do the double.

The following boys were awarded the School Colours for the different sports as follows: Ralph Smith, football and athletics; Brian Stockton and Jackie Murray, table tennis; David Ennis and David Tate, swimming.

The following boys were considered good enough to be selected to play soccer for the Senior ‘A’: Ralph Smith, David Halifax, Edward Kennedy, and Jimmy Street, and Junior ‘A’: Michael Shinkins, Jackie Murray, David Halifax, and Terry Reed.

We had a large number of boys in the Army Cadets and especially in the Band, where our turn out is in the region of fourteen for each parade, all credit to them.

Finally, our thanks to all the staff and especially to Mr. and Mrs. Honey for looking after our interests so well.

ROGER COPPIN

We have little to add to the above, except a thank you to the boys for their loyalty to us and the House. We wish all boys, staff, and readers everywhere a Happy Easter.

House Notes

House Captain: R. Smith

At the beginning of the term we had Mr. Culver as our Housemaster who did a very good job in keeping the House together, but he was relieved by Mr. and Mrs. Honey before half‑term. Since Mr. Honey and his wife have joined us, we have made great progress in the Queens' Cup competition. At a very fast pace we have moved from bottom position to top. It was a hard struggle but we eventually made it. Well done Aberdeen.

We didn't do very well in the inter‑house athletics or in the inter‑house swimming. I think this was due to the number of new boys that had been admitted into the House.

Tennis, from the House point of view, was very good this year as we nearly won the singles and doubles. Most of the boys in the House participated in this contest, and some did very well. R. Smith reached the fourth round, and I reached the semi‑finals in the singles event. In the doubles R. Smith and R. Buxton reached the semi‑final, but were beaten, also Brian Stockton and I reached the final and we were also beaten. A very good effort from the House, and my thanks to all those who took part.

Our junior and senior football teams are beginning to look promising this term, and we hope to do well in this field of sport. We still have a few good footballers in the House, R. Smith, D. Halifax, and J. Murray, who all play for the School team.

We have a large number of boys in the School cadet band, the number at the moment is eighteen. We must offer our thanks to these boys as they draw in a large number of house points when they go on parade.

We were sorry to say goodbye to J. Brown, M. Steele, and H. Johnsone, but we welcome the following boys: D. Halifax, T. Reed, J. Morgan, M. Wade, G. Markham J. Mansfield, M. Shinkins, R. Arnold, R. Rumble, P. Forsey, C. Bean, and R. Mason.

On Prize‑giving day a few prizes came to us, being won by D. Tate, R. Smith, Charlesworth, R. Buxton, D. Ennis, and myself.

We wish the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, and all members of staff a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Raymond Bowden

Since our arrival at Goldings and the taking over of Aberdeen from Mr. Culver, we have been impressed by the way in which the boys have rallied to and worked with us.

Our thanks also to the other members of the staff, for making us so welcome in their midst, also for all the help they have Given us. Lastly to all the Aberdeen boys, well done

It seems only a short while ago that we were preparing notes for the winter edition of THE GOLDONIAN and here we are again with spring almost upon us.

In the new term we have made progress and an improvement insofar as the morning inspections are concerned. We are getting fairly regular mentions nowadays which is most encouraging to the lads, and we must at this stage say a very big 'thank you' to the Painting and Decorating Department for doing a fine job on our bays and giving the lads an inspiration.

We are making steady progress in the 'Queens' Cup' and will endeavour to make an inroad into the big lead built up by Somerset.

The boxing tournament was very well staged thank you, Mr. Newton, and all concerned. We were placed third in the Seniors and second in the Juniors, and the following boys earned points for Aberdeen. Seniors: R. Buxton, R. Bowden, M. Clewer. Juniors: K. Bishop, W. Charlesworth, J. Murray, A. Sibbons, R. Carlyon, M. Tilbury, R. Smith, R. Harding, E. Kennedy, and D. Tate. In the Senior football R. Smith has maintained his place whilst in the Juniors we have R. Smith, J. Murray, and D. Tate. Table tennis has once again afforded us the opportunity to get into the news. B. Stockton has kept his place in the first team and M. Clewer in the second team.

There was some exciting play in the Inter-house Tournament and in the Senior events Aberdeen had the honour of providing two of the semi-finalists, B. Stockton and M. Clewer were drawn to meet and Brian triumphed and went on to the final where after a very exciting game he beat M. Ross of Somerset. Hearty congratulations, Brian.

We also had two of our boys drawn to meet in the Junior semi finals, when Jackie Murray beat Eddie Kennedy. Jackie was not so fortunate as Brian in his final, being defeated 21-19 in the final set by M. Hultum of Somerset.

Our thanks to Jackie for a praiseworthy effort and our hearty congratulations to the Somerset lad. Well done everybody in the table tennis sphere.

We now have two Sergeants in the cadet force, Mike Linnell and Ray Bowden, and Ray still holds the 'Best Bugler of the Year' title. Best of luck to them both.

Boys are now reading the Bible Lessons at morning assembly and our thanks in this respect are due to G. Tovey, M. Tilbury, J. Marsh, R. Coppin, M. Steele, and P. Hircock who read for Aberdeen.

During this term we have regretfully said 'Good-bye' to our House Captain, Bob Passmore, and we wish him 'all the best' in the outside world. M. Clewer has been appointed to replace him.

We have also 'lost' Phillip Rolls who has been restored and we wish him well.

The following new boys have been welcomed to Aberdeen House: Paul Clarke, David Ennis, Brian Stephens, and Paul Hircock, and we hope they will be very happy with us.

Finally, our very best wishes to the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, and all the staff who do so much to help us. A happy Easter to all.

Group Leaders:
A. Toynton, R. Passmoor, J. Bassett, P.Boltwood
Colours: Black and White

Let us start with the very end of last term, the School cross-country run, where T. Bowden and J. Lau came in 1st and 2nd for the House, and 7th and 8th places out of the School, which rounded off the term before the holidays very nicely.

The School football final was very exciting, with the battle between ourselves and Cairns, finishing by sharing the cup, as in spite of extra time the result was 2-2, the goals by R. Passmoor and P. Boltwood.

We drew again with Cairns in the School Quiz, admirably run by Mr. Sheppard, Mr. Rowlands, and Mr. Newton. Special mention for Aberdeen to J. Bassett, P. Rolls, G. Turner and M. Andrews.

Aberdeen was also well represented in the three football contests against Barclavians for the semi-finals, scores being 3-8, 5-0, and 2-1 against us after extra time. Special praise again to R. Passmoor (captain), P. Boltwood, and J.Lau.

We have made a good start to House cricket by already winning 2 out of 3 matches, once again special mention to T. Bowden, R. Passmoor and J. Lau.

Aberdeen as always is well represented in the Army Cadets and Band, as half of the House are keen members, and I must mention T. and R. Bowden for their duties on various occasions, and we congratulate J. Bassett and M. Linnell on passing their N.C.O.s' courses.

In the Nestles Ladder Tournament T. Bowden, J. Bassett, P. Boltwood and R. Passmoor are in the 'top ten'.

Wimbledon will also see Aberdeen in action as ball-boys and we hope all concerned will enjoy this great occasion.

We wish the best of luck to J. Bassett and M. Clewer in their RSA. results.

'Aberdeen Hut' at Dymchurch will miss 'Pop' Steele this year as he is touring Austria and Germany with Mr. and Mrs. New, and we wish them a happy and successful holiday, and safe driving on their long journey.

Finally, we have welcomed to the House, R. Smith, J. Murray, E. Kennedy, P. Rolls, and W. Charlesworth, and wished good fortune to J. Lau, E. Magellan, D. Thompson, .J. Chapman,' and M Dickson on their departure.

In conclusion we wish a very happy summer holiday to one and all.

House Notes
The Goldonian Spring 1962

Housemaster: Mr. C. Steele
House Captain: Douglas Thompson
Colours: Black and White

We are coming to the end of what seems to me a very short term, therefore the news too seems to be a bit short. The only boy who left us during the term was our House Captain, Alec Dale. Alec did a very good job as House Captain and was an outstanding figure on the sports field, all games seemed to come alike to him. We wish him every success in his job and future life in Liverpool. His successor, Douglas Thompson, has just been appointed and is doing his job well. Douglas is following in his brother's footsteps. Albert Thompson was Aberdeen's first House Captain when the House system was reorganized. One new boy joined our family during the term, Jimmy Brown from Barkingside. We hope he will settle down well! and take all the opportunities offered at Goldings.

QUEENS' CUP:

Since the Queens' cup was instituted Aberdeen have been runners-up each time to Pelham, last term there was only one point difference. This time, however, we are determined to have this cup. At the moment we are in first position, leading Pelham by fifteen points, but there are so many different ways in which points can be obtained that in the space of a week we could be fifteen points behind! I think that this is the reason why the Queens' Cup is so coveted. The Cup cannot be won by a house whose sole strength is on the sports field. To win this trophy a house must be consistent in all things. Although we have nine cups already in our sitting room I feel sure we could make room for this one. Looking through the list of boys who have collected merit points, it is pleasing to see that almost every member of the House has contributed in some way.

SPORT:

We did very well again at sport this term. Our senior team won the Inter-House Boxing, an event which almost always has gone to Somerset. The Inter-House Table Tennis Competitions were reintroduced after an absence of a few years and Aberdeen excelled themselves in these competitions winning both senior and junior cups. Both teams were unbeaten in their respective events. In football this term both senior and junior teams were unbeaten but these games do not count towards the Football cup. This cup will be decided by a knockout competition sometime before term's end.

The cross-country race has not been run yet and as we did so well last year I have high hopes of a repeat performance. Several Aberdeen boys represented the Army Cadet Force in their annual cross-country race and helped to bring both senior and junior cups back to Goldings. Douglas Thompson was second in the junior event but as this is a team event all boys must be congratulated.

HONOURS LIST:

John Bassett and Douglas Thompson who always did so well at school when they were juniors have passed their 'A' Certificates in schoolwork with very high marks and Eric Magellan was awarded his 'B' Certificate. John Bassett, Malcolm Clewer, and Leonard Carroll have recently sat the R.S.A. examination but results are not yet through; we are keeping our fingers crossed for them. Michael Hindle has been awarded his second class certificate for gymnastics, this is a very high award and as he is still a junior we expect a first class will come his way before he leaves. Only two boys have ever been awarded a first class, so this is indeed a fine achievement. John Lau is off to Belgium during Easter to represent the County Army Cadet Force at football.

Finally on behalf of the House I should like to wish the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, and all the Staff a very happy Easter, and to the boys whether you are going on 'home- leave' or staying here, make the most of your holiday.

House Notes
The Goldonian Winter 1961

Housemaster: Mr. and Mrs. M. Ludbrook
House Captain: Terry Cooper
Colours: Black and White

On reading my notes in THE GOLDONIAN of Christmas last year when I was looking forward to the day when we had a sitting room of our own, it is difficult to realize that so much has been done in reconstruction and improvements in just a year. Any boy who was here a few years ago would be amazed at the change but in a short while all these additions will be taken for granted-such is life! We have had an interesting and full term and it is only right to start with the most coveted trophy in the School.

QUEENS' CUP: Congratulations to Pelham for once again winning the Queens' Cup. (Congratulations also to the donor of the cup, David Wheatley, who is getting married just before Christmas). This term we are determined to knock Pelham off their pedestal and at the time of writing we are level with them on points in the number one position. Merit points are. collected each week by the same few boys and if we are to have THAT cup for OUR shelf each boy must do his utmost to get points and not leave it to others.

SPORT: We had a very good season at cricket and our senior team collected the Inter-House Cup by winning all their matches. Although this was a team· triumph 1 feel I must mention Alec Dale and Terry Cooper for their very good p8rformances. The Swimming Sports were very interesting again this year, our senior team were second and the junior fourth. Outstanding swimmers in the senior events were Tony Toynton, Jimmy Metcalfe, and Pat Snowdon and for the juniors Terry Bowden, Gerry Homer, and Alec Dunn. In the 'Little Wimbledon' tennis tournament we had more entrants than any other house, and our star players Alec Dale and Terry Cooper, became doubles champions and in the Senior singles final Alec beat Terry to give Aberdeen two more cups for their shelf. Football is in full swing now and at the moment both senior and junior teams are unbeaten.

PRIZE DAY: To collect a prize on Prize Day is always a great honour and this year quite a few came the way of Aberdeen boys. The boys who collected them were, Douglas Thompson for Mathematics and Art, John Bassett for Science and Technical Drawing also for Gardening (Intern1ediate), Terry Bowden for Shoemaking (Junior), Malcolm Clewer for Carpentry (Junior), and John Marsh for Gardening (Junior).

BITS AND PIECES: We have had quite a few new members to our House during the term, namely, Peter Bilton, George Turner, Leonard Carroll, Brian Stockton, Raymond Bowden, and Jamie Marsh, we welcome them not only to Aberdeen but to Goldings and hope they take all the opportunities offered. Pat Snowdon, and Imre Nagy, left us for situations. Jimmy Metcalfe was transferred to Woodford and Clifford Sainsbury moved 'down the road' to the Verney. A special thank you to Peter Marsh and Jimmy Chapman for doing such a good job in keeping the bathroom so beautiful and to Eric Magellen and Malcolm Clewer for their work in the sitting room.

Finally on behalf of the House I should like to wish the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, and all the Staff, a very happy Christmas, and to the boys going on 'home leave' --enjoy yourselves and behave yourselves, to the boys staying here, I'm sure everything will be done to make your holiday one to remember.

NOTE FROM MR. AND MRS. LUDBROOK

We are very happy to have joined the staff at Goldings as house parents of Aberdeen, and look forward to a happy association with both boys and staff in our future life here.

Our short period as house parents of Aberdeen has proved most interesting and rewarding to us and we trust we may follow worthily in Mr. Steele's footsteps.

House Notes
The Goldonian Spring 1961

Housemaster: Mr. C. Steele
House Captain: H. Bainton
Colours: Black and White

As I write these notes I can hear lots of noise coming from the Aberdeen bays. The boys are at school and shops, but the bays have been occupied by an army of painters, carpenters, plumbers, etc., all doing their bit in the big reconstruction programme in our house. I have been 'evicted' from my room which will now be a dormitory for six boys; I am sure those six will be as comfortable in their new quarters as I am in mine. Our sitting room has been started and we expect to be making use of it in the near future. Although we have had to put up with a lot of inconvenience and dust, in a few weeks' time when everything is finished and we see the great change which has come over the place, we will appreciate that it was all really worth waiting for. We shall have four bays and we have decided to name them after the four Patron Saints of the British Isles: St. George of England, St. Andrew of Scotland, St. David of Wales, and St. Patrick of Ireland.

House Notes
The Goldonian Winter 1960

Housemaster: Mr. C. Steele
House Captain: Albert Thompson
Prefect: Michael Toynton
Colours: Black and White

So much has happened during this last term that it is difficult to know where to begin. Soon after camp the new house system came into operation and we were changed from a senior house into a mixed house comprising juniors and seniors. With the exception of the middle dormitory, our House has been completely redecorated by the Painting and Decorating Department. Each boy has a new bed, new mattress and bedside carpet so it really is a 'new look' Aberdeen. We are all looking forward to the day when we have our own sitting room-this by the way is the next item on the reconstruction agenda. Instead of calling the dormitories Large Aberdeen, Small Aberdeen, etc., we intend to give each bay a name. I have had several suggestions but have reached no decision as yet.

The Inter-House Football Competition has now started and another new idea is that each house has its own football kit: our colours are black and white stripes, for obvious reasons. Our first game is against Cairns, and I think we should do quite well in this competition.

During the term we said goodbye to John Blackman who moved 'down the road' to the Verney. John Tilbury went to a situation in London and George Campbell set off for a completely new life by emigrating to Australia; at the time of writing, his ship is somewhere between the Suez Canal and Ceylon. I had a letter from him posted at Port Said and he was enjoying the trip very much. I should like to welcome the following four boys not only to Aberdeen but to Goldings and hope that they take all the opportunities offered. Robert Passmore from Newcastle, Patrick Boltwood from Crow borough, Michael Dickson from Blackpool and Danny Purt from Newton Abbott.

TERM HONOURS LIST:  Albert Thompson a Somerset boy before the reshuffle has done a very good job as House Captain.

Michael Toynton instead of going 'all to bits' when he was reduced from being a prefect has been a great help recently and is now reinstated.

Patrick Snowden, and Michael Justice of Cairns, were awarded the Bronze Cross for Life Saving. I believe this is the first time boys from Goldings have received this award.

Alex Dale was selected to play for the Lea Valley District as centre half.

Eric Magellan was awarded second prize of £2 in the Dr. Barnardo's Homes photographic competition. John Basset had the very great honour of presenting a bouquet on behalf of the School to Princess Margaret on her visit. Terry Cooper made the bedside lamp that was given to the Princess while she was here.

This has been a very good term and I should like to congratulate all the boys for attaining such a high standard.

Finally on behalf of the House I should like to wish the Headmaster and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, and all staff a very happy Christmas. To the boys going on home leave, have a good time, and for those staying here, I'm sure we shall enjoy ourselves.
