House Notes

The Goldonian Winter 1953

HOUSEMASTER: Mr Offord
HOUSE CAPTAIN: W. Lines
HOUSE PREFECTS: L. Weisenberg and P. G. Smith
Colours: Mauve and Black

Six Juniors have entered the House from the junior part of the school. They are Brian Locke, J. Willans, B. Franklin, L. Beckley, R. Mitchell and L. Weisenberg.

"Wacker" Walker has gone into the Army but has since been back to see us. R. Pugh and R. Holdenby have gone to situations and we hope they will show to the world the traditions of Goldings. One prefect has left us for a situation and we wish him well.

L. Weisenberg and P. G. Smith have attained the rank of acting prefect and John Woods, one of our former prefects has risen to the rank of School Captain. We wish him luck.

In football we have played two games, lost 5 goals to 3 against Mt. Stephen and won 8-0 against Somerset.

At cricket we won the league championship and shared the Cup with Somerset.

This season we hope to gain the boxing cup and I hope all boys will enter to support the House.

We had wonderful weather at Dymchurch this year and I think everyone enjoyed their three weeks:' stay. We had a very enjoyable day at Hastings where every boy was free to do as he pleased. I for one was glad to put my head to the pillow when I returned.

To sum up I think we have had quite a successful term but we shall try harder next term. I suppose all boys are looking forward to Christmas whether they are going on leave or staying at the school.  All boys and prefects wish Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley and Family, Mr. & Mrs. Corbett and Family, Mr. Offord our Housemaster and all the staff  a Happy Christmas and best wishes for the coming year.

House Captain W. Lines

HOUSEMASTER: Mr Offord
HOUSE CAPTAIN: W. Lines
HOUSE PREFECTS:
Colours: Mauve and Black

Once again the time has come for me to write the Aberdeen House Notes. Since our last notes we have said goodbye to David Snow, David Wright, Richard Davies and Clifford Hawkins. We welcome L. Wagstaff and T. Burrell, and we hope they will maintain the standard of the other boys in the House.

A word of congratulations must be given to T. Cramp ton on reaching the rank of A/Prefect, we hope he will soon be made up to full prefect.

So we come on to sport. When we finished the football season we were placed third in the league. Then came the cross-country in which we came second. I would like to congratulate Richard Davies on winning the senior run and David Mepham on winning the intermediate run, well done! In Athletics we came second once again, I would like to say thank you to all boys who. did their bit, big or small. In about two weeks we shall be having the school swimming sports. I hope in the next Goldonian I will be able to say we came first. So on the whole I think we have done very well. Well done, lads!

I would very much like to thank Mr. Culver for the excellent work he is doing in keeping the school going, also worthy of our thanks is Mr. Corbett who has regularly come up each morning to help Mr. Culver. We extend our hand of welcome to Mr: Warren and Miss Underwood and hope they will enjoy their stay at our school.

I will close now wishing everybody a very happy summer holiday with plenty of sunshine.

William Lines, House Captain.

The Goldonian Spring 1953

HOUSEMASTER: Mr Offord
HOUSE CAPTAIN: W. Lines
HOUSE PREFECTS: D. Wright, C. Hawkins,  A. Ali.
Colours: Mauve and Black

The time has come once again for me to write the Aberdeen House Notes. I must confess, however, it is quite a problem because of this term being so short. However, I must start with a word of welcome to David Jannaway. We hope he will maintain the good standard of our House, and do his little bit with the rest of us.

Now a word of congratulation to three boys on reaching the rank of Prefect. They are David Wright, Clifford Hawkins and Askey Ali. Well done! We have had to say goodbye to three of our boys this term so far. They are Fred and Arthur Aldwinckle and Francis Rainbird. We wish them the best of luck in their new jobs.

We have played seven games of football this term so far which leaves us bottom of the league. We have won three, lost three and drawn one. If we win our next two games we can reach second position in the league.

Boxing will be starting this week and I wish all our boys who enter for the competition the best of luck.

I will end wishing everybody a very happy Easter.

W. LINES, House Captain.

HOUSEMASTER:- Mr. J. J. Johnstone
HOUSE CAPTAIN:
HOUSE PREFECTS: M. Tasker, P. Spires, John Coomber.
Colours: Mauve and Black

Again we are glad to report the good progress we are making in our house, since the last GOLDONIAN was published.

So far we are doing well in our house football especially when we played Buxton House, and were defeated by them, It was one of the, best matches I have seen played for a long time, The 1st XI score was 4 - 3 the 2nd XI score was rather an unfortunate score 9 - 0.

We have got some new boys in the house, and I sincerely hope they will maintain the standard of the house, The new boys are: John Gray, Richard Davies; John Woods and Francis Rainbird.

We are sorry to lose Prefect P. Deadman and House Captain F. White who have gone out on situations. I hope they will not find it too strange in the outside world, We have one new promotion in the house, Prefect M. Tasker who is taking the place of Prefect P. Deadman I sincerely hope he will maintain discipline in the house.

All of you who are going on home leave we wish you a very Happy Christmas and a bright· New year.

Prefects P. Spires and John Coomber.

With the passing of yet another term, we look back with satisfaction on the progress we have made and the smoothness with which the House is running.

Brian Hird and Ivan Snow both received prizes for outstanding work during the term. Congratulations to both.

Sport: We are doing well at cricket. With the exception of two drawn games, the First Eleven have not lost a game. The Second Eleven are not doing so well but it is very pleasing to see them trying so hard.

Swimming: After a very thrilling finish Aberdeen managed to snatch a victory from Mt Stephen, who were only four points behind. Thus we take possession of the Swimming Cup, which we have not succeeded in winning for a very long time.

Brian Hampton is to be congratulated on winning the senior Victor Ludorum and Brian Hird on being runner - up for the junior medal.

Most of the senior boys went to Wimbledon as ball boys, and were very eager to see those famous tennis stars.

We have had to say good  - bye to two of our boys, Edward Deal and Fred Steyart. We hope they prosper in their trade.

All those members going to Dymchurch are looking forward to having an enjoyable three weeks holiday there We hope all boys going home will enjoy a pleasant summer holiday To all other members of the School we wish the same.

Brian Hird and I. R. Watson.

HOUSE CAPTAIN:- H. Clay.
HOUSE PREFECTS:- L. R. Watson, D. Winchester, F. Steyart.

As we near the end of another term we look back with satisfaction on the steady progress we have made. We have a very good entry for the Boxing Tournament and we hope to be rewarded by winning the Cup. Although we do not hold a very high position in the Football League, our teams have served us well.

Fate has decreed that we should meet the noble house of Somerset in the Football Cup Final, and it will be a great achievement if we beat them. We congratulate Cadets Winchester and Carson on their grand performances in the Cadet Boxing Championship. We are pleased to note that, with very few exceptions, all are striving to maintain the high reputation of the house. A Very Happy Easter to all.

House Masters
:
Mr. R. H. Purkis, Mr. L. Amos, Mr. R. T. B. Stackwood
House Captain: N. McKinney
House Prefects: L. E. Nice, H. Clay, L. Watson
Colours: Mauve and Black

We greet the end of another Summer Term with our usual cheerfulness. It has been a fairly successful term for Aberdeen. Though we gained the wooden spoon in the athletic sports, we have a few successes to record. In the cross-country race, for example, we gained third place. Boy South did well in this race. We have had some notable victories in the cricket and water polo competitions, particularly in the games against Cairns.

In May we surprised everybody by winning the monthly House Competition for the first time. The condition of the dormitory is not so good that it cannot be improved and next term we hope to bring it to a state of perfection.

We have some very promising juniors in the House and we rely on them for future successes. Love, our smallest junior, proved his worth by winning the mile race in the Cadet Battalion Sports, and by gaining second place in the County Sports. Carson, another promising junior has given good displays in boxing and cricket.

We all hope for a very successful Winter Term and then we shall be able to wear our tartan kilts without a care in the world.

Looking back to the days that used to be at Goldings
Turning back the clock

The Goldonian Spring 1941

House Master: Mr. R. H. Purkis
Colours: Mauve and Black

To most boys The Goldonian there can be but few is something new, and who remember the last edition just over twelve months ago. There has been during this period such a flow of boys entering and leaving the House and the School that before one really became familiar with a boy he was posted to a situation. This call for boy labour has been necessitated by the huge call‑up of older workers to military service and to vacancies in our ever‑expanding munitions factories. I am sure that those boys who have filled these vacancies are proud that though they are young they are able to render a service to their country in helping to keep the wheels of industry turning.

The House has now hibernated to the cellars for the duration and our dormitory proper has been shared by Kinnaird and McCall as a Locker room. We have so far surmounted our wartime difficulties very well, and although it has not always been quiet at Goldings “We can take it”

We did not shine amongst the winners of the various sports trophies again last year. How about staging a “Blitz” and winning a few?

The Boxing g Competition will soon be starting again and I should be very pleased to see the House well represented. While thinking of boxing, I should like to pay tribute to Prefect Grayson, who has recently left us and who was the  “Joe Louis” of Aberdeen. He was very useful in the House and also a. good all‑rounder at sport. We wish him every success.

Our sport will, I am afraid, be somewhat curtailed in the future, as our fields have been sacrificed to the plough. Still we must not grumble at these little inconveniences that War must inevitably bring. Rather let us work as never before, endeavouring to make ourselves good workmen and good citizens worthy of those who to‑day are sacrificing their Lives for our Liberty.
