House Notes
House parents:
Mr. and Mrs. H. Snowden The theme of the GOLDONIAN this time should be' I suppose, 'One Hundred Years of Child Care' in view of this being Centenary year of Dr. Barnardo's. This may not sound very exciting to some of the boys in Somerset, but it is an important year 1966 for many in this school. For some it is their first year here with us. For others it is their last. (I remember the day I left school it was as though something came up into my throat and I wanted to glide away as quickly as I could. Before I could do that, the Headmaster was saying something, and I remember the handshakes at the door as' I left and I vowed that I would try to never let them down.) For many others both in Somerset and the School it will be their first year at Wimbledon, and for us all it has been the first year of the new School Block It has also been an important term after saying farewell to 'Skip' we saw the football match of the year Staff versus Boys. We were represented by Phillip Giffard that tower of strength at full back and the boys were lucky to run out winners. It was a grand game and played in good spirit. Frank Lee once told a friend of mine that it was a long time before he learnt so to time his breathing that his lungs were absolutely full as the bowler delivered, in order that he might call 'No ball' when it was necessary with so little delay that the batsman had time to change his stroke. I'm sure that some of the staff players had been doing overtime with their breathing exercises in preparation for our vital match. Thank you all for an enjoyable evening in the top field. At the time of writing these notes Raymond Yassin and John Mercury are away at Conway and we shall soon be hearing of their happy and exciting month at Cartref Melys? We were all delighted at assembly when Mr. Wheatley presented to our House captain, Robert McNamara, the medal for the silver section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Congratulations, Robert, on your achievement. In the inter-House football match between Cairns and Somerset, I'm afraid I lost count of the goals scored. If it had not been for our goalkeeper, Barry Davison, I believe the score would have been much greater. I think we can also draw a moral from the match. Barry had to pick the ball out of the net twelve or thirteen times, but he never gave up trying. Well played Barry and well played John Puzey the smallest player on our side. During the term, Church activities, hobbies, the Cadets (now under the command of Mr. M. Brierley) and swimming have all been encouraged, and all have played their part in keeping the boys fully occupied during the evenings and at week-ends. It is also surprising how many boys excel themselves in some of these activities. I am reminded of some words Mr. Embleton once used, 'We cannot all get recognition on the honours board, or even win a prize, but you can prove yourself by going all out to be a better person than when you came to this school.' The time is now opportune to give a warm welcome to all new staff and every good wish to all those who have left us. The swimming gala is still to be arranged. I would like to see Somerset win it this year. We have some excellent swimmers Barry Foote, David Rudge, Raymond Yassin, Douglas Hansen and Anthony Yassin. In addition some of the juniors are making real progress Rlcky Knowles, Glenn Stewart, and Paul Withers. To say nothing of William Johnson's prowess as a swimmer. In closing I would like to wish Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. Embleton, and all the staff and boys a very pleasant and happy summer holiday. H. SNOWDEN As I prepare this note it is just five weeks before we go home for summer holidays. Since the last GOLDONIAN was published many boys have left the School and many have joined us. As the present House captain of Somerset I would like to say cheerio to Norman Brown who left us some time ago, and who I have succeeded. ROBERT MCNAMARA Table Tennis 1965-66
For
many years at Goldings we have had a table tennis tournament.
I
am proud to say that this
year
I
reached
the final of the junior event. The challenger was Anthony Yassin who put
up a good fight only losing by a narrow margin in two straight games. JOHN DOGSCHA Cartref Melys (Sweet Home) Cartref Melys is the most enjoyable place I have ever been to. The most exciting things we did were sailing and canoeing. We went canoeing on the River Conway where we were taught how to build rafts and how to get back into an over-turned canoe. We also went sailing on the River Conway. Sometimes we had to do things on our own without the help of a master. We enjoyed hiking, cycling, and cross country running and the use of the assault course. CLIVE TAYLOR |

House Notes
House parents:
Mr.
and Mrs. H. Snowden As I prepare these notes, here we are in the middle of spring-a new season. I have just returned from a stroll down Goldings Lane and was greatly impressed by the enormous lime trees that dwarf the lane and the beautiful red horse chestnut trees which stood out midst all the shades of green foliage. With this new season comes a new House Captain who is most deservedly Michael Hultum, who took over from David Blower who has left us to become a Carpenter at Walsall, Staffordshire. All of us, I am sure, wish Michael continued success as Captain of Somerset House. At this point I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs. Embleton back to the School after her illness, and we all hope that she will soon be enjoying good health once more. Also joining the staff this term are Mr. and Mrs. Patterson who have taken over Cairns House from Mr. Clarke who has left us to take up a new post in Cambridge. Coming from the Yorkshire area are Mr. and Mrs. Burton, who have come to take a worthy post in the School. With them came Captain Rostron from the Church Army, who is staying with us until he enters St. Michael's College, Llandaff, Cardiff, to study for the Ministry of the Church. We extend to all, our very best wishes and trust that their stay will be a happy one. Last but not least we extend our welcome to 'Irma' who has come from Switzerland to learn the English language. We all hope that she will be happy with us and that she will enjoy her stay in this country. Since the Spring issue of THE GOLDONIAN Paul Goodall has left us to take up a post at Stowmarket, and Victor Rowlands has gone to Caernarvonshire to work as a painter and decorator in Llandudno. We wish them both the best of luck for the future. Queens' Cup COMPETITION: At the time of writing these notes we are in second place with 70 points, this being 16 points behind Pelham the present holders of the trophy. With continued effort I believe we can reduce this lead and make it a real fight towards the end of term. In the Inter-House Bay Competition the position on going to press is as follows: Columbus 14 wins, Scott 14 wins, Shackleton 2 wins, Hilary 1 win. CRICKET: So far, a pleasing feature of the cricket has been that three members of Somerset House, namely Norman Brown, Edward Dominey, and the House Captain have represented us in the School eleven. I think a most encouraging feature so far has been the form shown by some of the younger boys of the School. On the 5th July, Norman Brown will be going along to the Oval for a trial match and we wish him every success and trust it will extend his enthusiasm for the game. In closing may I thank Terry Cain for his promptings in getting the notes prepared in good time for the Editor of our Magazine.

House Notes
House parents:
Mr. and
Mrs. H. Snowden Once again it is time to write our house notes and first of all we must welcome our new house parents, Mr. and Mrs. Snowden, who have succeeded Mr. and Mrs. Goodman. When I say 'succeeded' I mean that the latter have taken over Pelham House. We extend to Mr. and Mrs. Snowden a very warm welcome to Goldings and we trust that their stay here will be a very happy one. We must also congratulate David Blower on becoming our new House Captain. Well done David. I should also like to take this opportunity of welcoming the boys who have been lucky enough to be placed into the Somerset House as a result of the splitting up of MacAndrew. Well now I have welcomed a great many people and so I think that it is time to get on with the house news. In the Inter House Bays Competition the position on going to press is as follows: Columbus 28 wins, Hilary 10 wins, Shackleton 9 wins, Scott g wins. Queens' Cup COMPETITION: At the time of writing these notes we are lying in second position with 243 points, this being 43 points behind Pelham, the present holders of the trophy. I think that with a bit of real effort the House might be able. to rout Pelham out of first place, so come on boys, let's make the effort. TABLE TENNIS: We have had a good deal of success with this side of the social events. In the Inter-School Competition we had two boys in the senior finals, namely, Shorne Kane and Michael Hultum. The former went on to win a good game. Well done both of you, and for entertaining us to some real good play. We also saw Jackie Murray beat Edward Dominey in the junior event after a good game (Who knows. what potential star is in our midst?) CONFIRMATION: On Tuesday, 9th March, we all gathered in the church for the Confirmation Service, when seven members of the Somerset House took part. These boys were: Barry Foote, Douglas Hansen, Kenneth Hart, Edwin Rous, Paul Walkeden, Anthony Yassin, and Raymond Yassin. The service was a very impressive one and should long be remembered by all those who were present and especially those who received confirmation. Our television is still going strong, despite the many hours of Coronation Street viewing it has been putting in. The dancing season is in full swing again, and the linen cupboard arid the ironing board have been a hive of activity especially on Friday evenings. At this time all the boys are eagerly looking forward to the Easter holidays, and suitcases and locks are coming in for much attention. This is also a sign for us to close these brief notes. COMBINED EFFORT: The boys of Somerset would like to thank all the staff who have cared for them this term-whoever they may be and a Happy Easter to all staff and readers. TERRY CAIN Since our arrival at the School,- we have been very impressed by the way in which we have been received. Members of the staff have gone out of their way to help us; and the majority of the boys have made our initial stay a very happy one.

House Notes
House parents:
Mr. and Mrs. C. Goodman
Once again it is time to write our House notes. We have not had any new boys this term, and since our last notes we have said goodbye to our House captain John Buggs, also John Moody and John Kay, and we wish them the best of luck in their outside employments. We also would like to seize the opportunity of congratulating Keith McSweeney on being made up to House Captain and Michael Ross to a group leader; also Michael Hultum has been made up to junior School Captain. Well done 'Mac', 'Roscoe', and 'Mick'. The Painting and Decorating Department who made such a good job in our bays, have done another good job in our bathroom. In the Queens' Cup we are doing very well, and at the moment we are top, but it looks as if we will soon be under heavy opposition from Cairns, so watch out lads, and keep up the generous source of house points! At Christmas we received a card from our 'old faithful' of Somerset, who remembered us-Robert Cox. We wish Norman Ireland (Noddy), all the best on the Outward Bound course, which he is taking four weeks to do, and will return just before we break up for Easter holidays. We are hoping to write something about it in the next GOLDONIAN. It won't be surprising to see some of the lads green with envy at 'Noddy's' adventure! Edwin Rous has lost his tonsils during the term, fortunately (or unfortunately) he has kept his large appetite. The following boys: Victor Rowlands, Robert MacNamara, Norman Ireland, and Gordon Hughes, put in art paintings for the 'Children's Art Competition' in London this term. SPORT: We have not done too badly in sport this term, but there is still time to improve and earn more house points for the Queens' Cup, so keep up the good work lads, especially the table tennis players, who gained generous house points. We started on 10th and nth February with boxing. The first night we did very well. and both juniors and seniors of our House were first, but on the second night things turned out a little different, in the end. The juniors were first by four points, and won the John de Vischer Cup. The seniors were a close second, two points behind the winners. Edward Dominey won the best loser prize for the Fred Verlander Cup. Well done! On behalf of the House I would like to thank all those who entered, and even if they did lose, they got points for entering! One of the best bouts was between Norman Brown and Ralph Smith (Aberdeen), in which Norman was knocked out after two minutes in the first round! FOOTBALL: We are doing fairly well so far, but could still do better. In the Junior 'A' from our House, we contribute: Keith McSweeney, David Blower, Norman Brown, and Shorn Kane; and in the Senior 'A': Keith McSweeney, Trevor Davison, William Ireland, and David Blower. TABLE TENNIS: So far this term we have won all our inter-house matches both junior and senior. In the individual competition, we had a finalist in the junior and senior events; Michael Hultum played very well for the juniors. winning 21 - I5, 11 - 21, 21 - 19. Michael Ross also played extremely well for the seniors, and played a very close and exciting game, but unfortunately lost 21 - 14, 18 - 21, 20 - 22. We are looking forward to cross-country at the end of term. After which we take our welcome' Easter holiday! We would like to wish Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, Mr. and Mrs. Goodman, and all members of the staff a happy Easter. GORDON HUGHES |

House Notes
House parents:
Mr.
and Mrs. C. Goodman Again the time has come to put pen to paper and write the House notes. Firstly we have to say goodbye to David Gee, Leslie Dawkins, Jimmy Turner and Robert Cox. These are all a great loss to the House, as they were the back-bone of our sporting activities. We take great pleasure in welcoming N. Brown, R. Atkins and D. Amlar, the last named answering to the name of 'Carrotts'. Since the last notes there has been very little in the way of sport, except that the Juniors got through to the football final with Cairns. It was a good match, and Cairns were the eventual winners 2-1. Thank you Cairns for a great game! Congratulations to Trevor Davidson and Bill Ireland on becoming Group Leaders. Since Easter the swimming bath has been opened, and now we have the warm weather it is being well and truly used. We are now all looking forward to Wimbledon and then the summer holidays, and we hope that Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley, Mr. and Mrs. Embleton, all the staff and boys have a very pleasant time. JOHN BUGGS |

House Notes
House parents: Mrs. F.
Darton,
Mr. A. P. Culver It is my pleasure to write our notes for this issue of THE GOLDONIAN I would first of all like to welcome the following boys to our House: Roger Furley, who was transferred from Cairns, and as you see is already a group leader, also David Bentley, Michael Cousins, and David Blower. I am glad to say our sportsmen are on top with Colin Bishop coming first in the Cadet cross-country. We still have four boys in the School football team, namely Les. Dawkins, Jim Kennedy, Colin Bishop, and Bill Hewitt. Well done lads! We have done very well in the Inter-House Table Tennis Competition, the seniors and juniors both coming second in their groups. We came second in both the junior and senior Boxing Cup Competition, losing both by only one point. I have been House Captain since Sidney Bracken left us at Christmas, and I must thank the three group leaders who have helped me so much. We are at last making some progress with dormitory inspection and occasionally receive mention in assembly, but we do quite well in school and workshop. I should like to congratulate David Page for keeping our sitting room in such good shape, also John Foote for the improvement in the bathroom. Jim Kennedy and Colin Bishop too are doing great work with the improvements in the toilets. We could soon be 'top house' if everyone pulled their weight. David Page and Les. Dawkins have both received their Drumming Certificates. All these achievements help the Home! R. COX |

House Notes
House parents:
Mr. A. P. Culver and Mrs. F. Darton House It Does not seem long since I was asked to write our House notes for the summer edition, but I can see that it is time for me to start again. First of all I would like to say we are very pleased to welcome Mrs. Darton as our official housemother, and we hope she will be very happy in her new sphere. Also I would like to welcome the following boys who have joined us since the last publication of THE GOLDONIAN: M. Kerry, G. Willoughby, M. Horton, T. Davison, C. Horsnell, and R. Furley who was originally in our House, was changed under the reorganization, and has now transferred back to us. I hope that all our new friends will be happy with us. Of course if we gain new friends we must also lose old friends, and this term we have said goodbye to: Ivan Smith who 'joined up' in the Para troop Regiment, Tony Davison, George Upchurch, Barry Moase, and David Hatch. David was a fine athlete and sportsman, and he did much for the House on the field of sport. We wish all these the best of luck in their new surroundings. SPORT: We are lucky to have so many School and Cadet footballers in our House, they certainly help us a lot in inter-house matches. So far we have played and won two games. Towards the end of term we had School Colours presented to the following: Colin Bishop, Leslie Dawkins, Jimmy Kennedy, and Willie Hewitt for football; John Foote for swimming; Robert Cox for cricket. Well done boys! At the beginning of this section I mentioned Cadet football, well in our House we have three County Cadet players, viz. Colin Bishop, Jimmy Kennedy, and David Gee, well done chaps, and keep it up. HOME AND ABOUT: Three terms ago the Queens' Cup was brought into being, and although we have not done too well with dormitory inspections we have done well with points for shop work and sport, so if everyone pulls their socks up now that we have a housemother we could win the Cup this term. So here's hoping we can report success in the next issue. Going back a few paragraphs when I welcomed Mrs. Darton as our housemother I would point out that we in this House are very fortunate to have two such experienced people as 'Skip' and Mrs. Darton to look after our welfare. As many of you know they have both been on the Home staff many years and their combined efforts will surely bring us to the 'top of the tree'. We send our best wishes to Mr. David Wheatley on his coming marriage, and wish him and his future wife every happiness. Congratulations to Robert Cox in succeeding Ivan Smith as group leader, keeping our total up to three. Congratulations also to Mike Kerry for getting his third class certificate for gymnastics, maybe you will soon get your second class as well Mike! So far we have had a very good selection of films for Thursday evenings, and in my opinion Al Capone was the best so far, but by the look of the list of films to come there will be plenty more good ones. A Merry Christmas to everyone! SIDNEY BRACKEN, House Captain |

House Notes
House parents:
Mr. A. P. Culver Once again another term is almost over and time again to write Somerset House Notes. To begin with I would like to welcome the following boys to our House: Leslie Dawkins, John Bugg, John Timmings, and with regret say goodbye to Melvin Bullock, Graham Bishop, and Geoffrey Warner, who have gone to situations. As with all houses we have had some drastic changes, since the summer holidays. Lots of boys have been transferred from other houses, including of course our quota of junior boys. This is a good thing from the house point of view, because at whatever age a boy joins the School he will remain in the one house until he leaves, and this should lead to a better team spirit throughout the whole of the School. We are the first House to start the structural changes in the old wing, and already we have a sitting room which is very much appreciated by all. SPORT: Congratulations to Colin Bishop, Jimmy Kennedy, and William Hewitt, on being selected to play for the Hertford and District Football Team, which plays against other districts from all over the county. At the time of writing these notes we have played two house matches against Pelham and won both, 4-0 and 2-1, which is a very encouraging start. I will close these notes by wishing Mr. and Mrs. WheatIey and all staff and boys a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. R. SMITH, Prefect |
