The Goldonian Winter 1953

HOUSEMASTER: Mr. A. P. Culver
HOUSE CAPTAIN: E. Hastings

"How time flies". Once more I have to put on record the achievements and alas some failures of Somerset House.

Since the last notes we have again said goodbye to several of our house members. Barry Raines and "Slash" Gainard have left us for the Merchant Navy, we all wish them every success in their new venture. Michael Sharp and Alan Roberts have also left us for situations. Good Luck to them both.

Sport: As we stated in the summer issue Somerset hoped to win the Swimming Cup, and it is my pleasure to be able to record another win in that direction. Although we did not win the Cricket League, we were second best and captured the Knock-Out Cup.

We welcome Mr. and Mrs. Marriott who are taking charge of two Junior Houses Buxton & Kinaird.

Congratulations to John Woods who has replaced Jimmie Watts as School Captain.

Well it only leaves me now to wish Mr. Wheatley and Family, Mr. Corbett and Family, Staff and Boys a Very Happy Christmas

Good Luck to you all.

Eric Hastings, House Captain

The Goldonian Summer 1953

HOUSEMASTER: Mr. Warren
HOUSE CAPTAIN: E. Hastings

"Here we are again", with Somerset House Notes. Since our last notes one or two changes have taken place. We have said goodbye to some of our members including John Irwin, Terry Fox, Cyril Fox, John Kerry, P. Parry, C. Measey and last but not least good old "Joe" Mason.

Since losing some of our boys we have had other boys from the Junior School and the following boys are now in the house:-

Alan Wheatley, Jack Richards and B. MacCarthy. We hope they will pull their weight with the rest and maintain the standard set by the older boys.

Sport: We have done quite well in the Cricket League and we are in the final of the knock-out cup in spite of losing a valuable wicket (J. Kerry).

Swimming: this year, we hope, should result in a win for Somerset. Although again losing one of our best swimmers, C. Fox, who was in all the finals. Mr. Culver, our permanent House Master, has had to take over general duties in the school so we have not seen much of him in his capacity of Somerset House Master. But I know that all the boys will appreciate the work he is doing.

We must welcome Mr. Warren to his role as House Master also Miss Underwood to Sick Bay. I will close now wishing the Headmaster and family, Mr. Corbett and family, Staff and boys a happy summer holiday

Eric Hastings, House Captain

The Goldonian Spring 1953

HOUSEMASTER: Mr. A. P. Culver
HOUSE CAPTAIN: E. Hastings

Once again its time to pickup our pens and thoughts and think back through the term and note the things we have done. To me this is new as it is my first term of having the pleasure.

First the farewells. With much sorrow we had to say good-bye to Johnny Douthwaite. Though a cripple Johnny exceeded many boys in the house at sport and in his trade with which we wish him good luck in his new surroundings and hope to see more of him.

We congratulate House Captain M. Jarvis on attaining the rank of School Captain and C. Measey on becoming a prefect and A. Gainard to A/ P. We wish them every success in their new posts.

From farewells and congratulations we go on to House sport. We are doing exceedingly well at football and are second, our chief rivals being Cairns and we have only one more game to play. We have many entries in the Boxing competition and if everyone tries their best we shall give a good account of ourselves. Although not connected with the House two things are worthy of mention. First we have a good number of players in the School Table Tennis Team. Our contribution is five of the six players. The teams include C. Fox, T. Fox, A. Gainard, B. Raines and myself.

Secondly, Peter Parry's outstanding performances in the All-England Cadet Force Boxing. He has now reached the finals which he will fight at Cardiff. All our good luck and wishes go with him.

I end these notes by wishing Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley and family, Mr. and Mrs. Corbett and family and all the staff a Happy Easter.

HOUSEMASTERS: Mr. A. P. Culver
HOUSE CAPTAIN: P. Bloor
HOUSE PREFECTS:

This is the second time I have had the privilege of writing the house notes, and since the last time we have maintained our standard.

Sport: In the .football league we are doing fairly well. The seniors are good, but the juniors need a little more teamwork to improve.

We give a hearty welcome to the new boys: A. Roberts, A. Gainard, J. Irwin and, J. Gaud. We hope they keep up to our standard and enjoy life here. They are lucky to have joined our honoured house.

Now a word to all the house. I hope you will come back from leave determined to win all next term's sport, especially the boxing. So I wish you all a happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

The boys of Somerset wish the Headmaster and his family, and all the staff especially our dear Housemaster.

Skipper, a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

P. Bloor, House Captain.

The Goldonian Summer 1949

Having once more drawn near to the end of another term, we pass on to you a brief account of the many activities of Somerset.

Boxing: We again hold the cup, which we won, in the last competition, thanks to the boys who played their parts so gamely. We congratulate the following: Prefects Knight and Webb and Boys Stewart, Foley, R. Williams and A. Webb, upon winning the contests in their weights.

Football: In this particular sport we took both League Shield and Cup. In the League we lost only one game, against Mount Stephen. In the cup rounds we had a close call with Cairns, drawing the first match 1 ‑ 1 but we just managed to scrape through the replay by winning 2 ‑1. Then 'we romped home to take the cup from Aberdeen by winning the game 8 ‑1.

Athletics: Here we fall from our leading position to third place. So we congratulate Mt. Stephen on retrieving the Athletic Shield, which we had held for two years in succession.

Swimming: Here again we drop, this time to fourth place, for Aberdeen to take the cup which they so deservedly won.

Cricket: We are doing very well up to date. We have lost only one game so far; that was the first match against Aberdeen. Since then we have been winning by easy margins. With good fortune we hope to win both League and Cup, so pull hard Somerset, and also take heed of the advice given to you in the last issue.

Departures: John Field, whose ability in the field of sport we sadly miss, has left us to take a situation. We wish both him and John Fletcher, who bad a very short stay with us, the very best of luck.

Arrivals: We welcome to Somerset House Horsley and we hope he will help us maintain our good standard,

S. WILSON.

The Goldonian Spring 1949

HOUSEMASTERS: Mr. Patch, Mr. Embleton, Mr. W. Purkis, Mr. R. Moss
HOUSE CAPTAIN: S. Wilson.
HOUSE PREFECTS: J. Knight, B. Webb, D. Wilkes

Once again Somerset house notes consist largely of our sports successes. As you may already know we have had two very successful years with our 1st XI. At the time of writing these notes we are still maintaining the standard set by the sadly missed Old Boys who have left us during the term.

These leaders, School Captain G. Vallance, House Captain Sansom, and Prefect Blampied led our house to a very high standard, putting us in a position that we are very proud of. Football - Up to date we have won all our inter-house matches except one (the game with Mount Stephen). They put up a very good performance and deserved their victory. Our second XI, I fear, have not done quite so well and are well behind the leading house (Cairns). However they still have a sporting chance of being runners-up.

Boxing: At present we still have a considerable number of competitors in the competition. We hope they will continue to collect points and bring us through once again. Cricket-We are looking forward to the cricket season and hope that every one will play his part in it and try to repeat our last year's performance. A spot of practice at the beginning of the season makes all the difference in the early games.

Congratulations: to D. Williams and B. Webb on becoming Prefects. We hope house members will assist them with their new responsibilities.

Departures: We have lost some very valuable members; School Captain G. Vallance, House Captain J. Sansom, Prefect W. Blampied and A. Dorman. We wish them the very best of luck in their new life.

Arrivals: Fletcher, A. Webb and S. Boobier have joined us. We welcome them to our house and we hope they will be helpful to us in our many activities.

To give a house the winning will Each boy must work and never be still; The big, the small, the weak, the strong, Must team together all along.

S. Wilson

The Goldonian Summer 1948

House Masters: Mr. Patch, Mr. Embleton, Mr. W. Purkis, Mr. R. Moss
House Captain: J. Sansom
House Prefects: D. Moore, S. Wilson, J. Knight

Athletics: Since the last House Notes were written, Somerset House has added two victories to its credit. Somerset has won the Inter-House Athletic Shield and Cross Country, Cup. This year's Athletic Shield was more closely contested than last year's, when' Somerset won by a large margin. Cairns, who' were second, did very well indeed. The Cross Country competition has been started again only recently and Somerset House is proud to have won it. Most of the boys who took part in it were not sure of the route because they had not competed before. The first four Somerset boys were School Captain Vallance House Captain Samson, Prefect S. Wilson and Prefect J. Knight.

Cricket: Somerset House has done well this season having played three matches and won them. Somerset's opponents in the semi‑final of the cup are Buxton a keen game is anticipated. There remain three games to be played in the League.

Congratulations: Congratulations to G. Vallance on being made School Captain. Since his appointment the School has improved in many ways and the discipline of the boys has improved a great deal.

Admittances: Since the last Notes, Mr. Moss has been appointed a Somerset House Master. We welcome him to our House and feel sure that he will enjoy being with us. Mr. Moss has a great experience of football and cricket, which will be very helpful to us in future.

Holidays: The holiday season is here, and we wish all members of our House who are spending the holidays with their people a very happy time.

J. SANSOM

The Goldonian 1938

House Master: Mr. Tempest

We will try to get over the black spots first; and they take some getting over 19 black marks during the month of October. This
will not do. If the boys of Somerset cannot be good, they can at least be more careful!

Many events have taken place in the sporting activities of the House since the last Goldonian; so many, in fact, the memory of them is fast merging into things forgotten. As they will most likely be mentioned on other pages, we will not resurrect them here.

There has been a big change in the House football, in that members of the School 1st and 2nd XI's are not eligible for the House teams. In our first match under the new system, we beat Aberdeen 1st XI 6—2, and drew with the 2nd XI 4—4. The House Football should be much more interesting for the majority of the players, as the teams should now be much better balanced, no team having a preponderance of School stars. If successful, we hope to see the same idea applied to the cricket competition.

We give our congratulations to Mercer, upon his appointment to the position of School Captain, and we are sure that he will carry out his difficult duties conscientiously and well. Also to Mason and Jordan, we wish success in their School Prefectships.

We close these notes with a hearty wish for the Merriest of Christmases to all Somerset boys, past and present.
