THE GOLDONIAN
2nd COY. 1st "C" BATTALION.
 HERTFORDSHIRE REGIMENT.
Fourteenth ANNIVERSARY SUPPER

On Friday, 14th December, 1959, we celebrated our fourteenth anniversary by having a supper and show of coloured slides of our last annual camp.

Ninety-one people were present, including seventy-four members of the Company.

For the first time in our history, we had two ladies amongst our guests, Mrs. Embleton, our Matron, who does so much to help us throughout the year, and Mrs. Halfhide, who is also a very good friend of the Company.

We were particularly pleased to have C.S.M. Hutchings of the 3rd East Anglian Regiment with us, and to know that he will be assisting with our training during this year.

After the parade at 6 p.m. the Company and guests sat down to a sausage and mash supper, followed by fruit and jelly trifle, coffee, sweets, and fruit. After we had all shown the chef our appreciation of his meal by clearing our plates, our Headmaster addressed us on the work of the Cadets. During his speech the Headmaster reminded the boys present of all the past members of the Company who had played their part in the various sporting and training activities of the Company and Battalion, and said that all present and future members had a very good example of loyalty and standard to look up to.

The Headmaster welcomed our guests and said that he was pleased to see so many of our friends present.

Captain Culver then thanked the Headmaster and friends for their interest in the Company, and gave a brief report on the welfare of the Company. He said that there had been 869 boys through the ranks of the Company, and felt sure that being cadets had helped them become good citizens with a sense of responsibility and loyalty to the School and to the community at large. Captain Culver added that he was very proud and grateful to have had the privilege of being instrumental in the training of all past and present members of the Company.

Captain Culver went on to say that the Company had maintained strength of seventy cadets each year over the whole of the Company's fourteen years of existence. He also spoke of the good work of the 'Corps of Drums', and said that they had done much good work by maintaining a high standard of smartness and playing, bringing credit to the Company. Battalion and School. During the year they had fulfilled many engagements throughout the County and were in great demand already for functions in 1960.

Mrs. Embleton was then asked to make the presentations for proficiency and promotions, which were as follows:

Section Efficiency Shield (annual): No. 3 Sec., L/Cpl. Tangen i/c
Best· .303 shot and first class shot: L/Cpl. Tangen.
Best .22 shot: Cdt. Watkins.
Cup for longest serving member: Cdt. Watkins, but as he was leaving very shortly to join H.M. Forces, he asked that it be presented to Cdt. Bishop who was the next longest serving member, 3 years, 5 months.
Prize for newest member: Cdt. B. Harvill, I week.
Promotions:
CpI. Chaytors to Sgt. i/c I Platoon.
L/CpI. Meek to CpI. 2 i/c I Platoon.
L /CpI. Copping to CpI. I Platoon.
Cdt. Mohammed to L/Cp!. i/c 4 Section.
Cdt. Bishop to L/CpI. i/c 5 Section.
Cdt. Baldry to L/CpI. i/c 6 Section.
Long Service Chevrons: CpI. I. Smith, Cdts. Watkins, Parsons, Bishop, Peek, and Bainton.

The youngest Cadet then presented Mrs. Halfhide with a floral bowl as a token of appreciation and thanks for the beautiful standard she made and presented to the Company last December. (See last term's issue of THE GOLDONIAN.)

CpI. Copping then presented Mr. Eley, our chef, with a gift on behalf of the Company in appreciation of his untiring work in preparing such an excellent supper.

Drum-major Stevens finally thanked all members of the staff who had contributed to make the 14th Anniversary Supper such a great success.

After the supper, our good friend Lieut. Burgess from H.Q. Coy., showed many coloured slides of the activities of the Battalion during the last year, and especially the 1959 camp. The Headmaster also showed slides of many School incidents.

We then dispersed, and carried with us many happy memories, and perhaps a little sad that yet another landmark had been passed in the life of the Company

A. P. CULVER, Captain, O.I.C
