THE
GOLDONIAN We started our fifteenth year with the Regiment by being hosts to the Army Cadet Force South-Eastern Command Boxing Finals. Everyone concerned are sincerely thanked for making the evening of 9th January, 1960, such a success, especially Mr. Newton, our P.T.I., for the excellent arrangements and decorations of the gymnasium, Mr. Eley, our chef, for the supper arrangements, to Mr and Mrs. Cranie for their work in the dining hall, and to our Headmaster for being host to the many V.I.P.s and officials who attended the boxing. In the morning preliminary bouts were fought, and eight entries were entered from this Company; from these two boxed and the others were unable to be matched. Cadet Beresford lost his bout by a narrow margin and L/Cpl. Peterson won. In the evening L/CpI. Peterson won again and so went on to the A.C.F. National Semi-Finals at Bicester on the 30th January, 1960, and here he fought Cadet Lewis from Oxfordshire. Lewis just out pointed L/Cpl. Peterson but both lads put up a very spirited performance. Six of our boys were chosen to play for the Battalion in the Junior A.C.F. Football and are doing very well. We entered a team of seniors and juniors in the A.C.F. Cross-country which was held at St. Albans on the 13th March, 1960, and our junior team came first and senior team second. Individual achievements were Cadet C. Bishop first for the Company (junior), and Cdt. Bainton first for the Company (senior). The Battalion won three cups in all, viz.: Junior Inter-Pre-Services Cup; Senior Inter-Battalion Cup, and Junior Inter-Battalion Cup. At the .recent Certificate 'A', Part I examinations we entered two boys and Cdt. C. Sainsbury gained his half star. Our training is going on steadily and we are looking forward to the lighter evenings when we shall be able to get out each Friday. Since my last notes we have said goodbye to Sergeant Chaytors and L/Cpl. Maidment and the following promotions have now been made: CpI. Smith, to Sgt. i/c No. I platoon, L /CpIs Copping, Capon, and Meek to Corporals and Cadets Bishop, Browning, Baldry, and Logan to Lance Corporals. We have not had the services of C.S.M. Hutchins of the 3rd East Anglian Regiment for a long time as he is on other duties, and I must thank all my N.C.O.s for their keenness and being able to assist in instruction; without trained N.C.O.s I should be unable to give adequate instruction for we are seventy-nine strong and it would be too much for one officer to carry on. On Tuesday, 1st March, 1960, the School and Company were honoured by having the Duke of Edinburgh's Banner on view. Sgt. Campbell and Sgt. Smith, I. carried out their two-hour guard of the Banner in a very smart and able manner. The Banner was presented· to the Army Cadet Force in honour of their Centenary Year and is being displayed in all counties throughout Great Britain. It will finally be lodged at the A.C.F. Training College at Frimley Park near Camberley. A. P. CULVER, Captain, O.I.C From Company notes The Goldonian Spring 1960 |
