THE
GOLDONIAN Owing to our Headmaster being seriously ill, and the influenza epidemic, we had to postpone our thirteenth Anniversary Supper, due to be held on the 4th December, 1958, and it was held on Friday, 6th March, 1959. Now we have entered our fourteenth year and are still playing our part in the training and sporting activities of the Battalion. I would like to congratulate Cpl. Bryant and Cdt. Meek on passing their P.T. courses at Shorncliffe. Cpl. Bryant was recommended to attend the advanced course at Aldershot on the 7th April, 1959, and he will be going with Cpl. Watkins, who was recommended for the advanced course when he attended a previous course at Shorncliffe. I know I voice the good wishes of all members of the Company to both N.C.O.s and know that they will return with further honours and the coveted "crossed swords". We entered seven Cadets for the A.C.F. Boxing Competition and in the Southern Area Finals, held at Brentwood on the 10th January, 1959, the results were as follows: Cpl. Watkins, L/Cpl. Stevens, L/Cpl. Bacon and Cdt. Walsh won their bouts; Cdts. Young and Medland were runners-up. In the A. C.F. National Semi-finals, L/Cpl. Bacon, L/Cpl. Stevens and Cdt.Peek were defeated during the afternoon bouts. Cpl. Watkins and Cdt. Walsh won their contests during the afternoon, but both were defeated during the evening bouts. This programme of boxing was televised and all who entered are to be congratulated on their keenness. Last year L/Cpl. Brown (who has now left the School) and Cpl. Watkins both reached the Finals of the A.C.F. National Boxing Championships. Our winter training programme has been interrupted because of the large number of boys that became victims of the influenza epidemic, but now we are back on our feet we shall go ahead with our training and weekly shoots. Soon the week-end camps and .303 shoots will commence and before we know where we are the annual camp will be imminent. This year we shall be going to Thetford, in Norfolk, on the 2nd August. The. inter-Battalion .and the inter-Company Cross-country competition was run on Sunday, 1st March. 1959, at Hertford. Our Company created a record by winning for the Battalion the Senior Shield and Junior Cup, as well as winning the inter-Company Senior and junior Cups. Recently I was pleased to welcome C.S.M. Hutchins, of the 3rd East Anglian Brigade, to the Company. He is attached to the Hertfordshire Territorial units and is assisting with the training of the Company. Recently I received a letter from Ian Sangster, who is now a sergeant in the R.A.S.C. serving in Perak. Ian was a member of this Company and was also in the Corps of Drums whilst at the School. I get many letters from ex-Cadets, both in the Services and in Civilian life and I do welcome all letters from old members of the Company. We have lost nine members of the Company to the Forces and to situations since our last notes and I wish them all success in their new spheres. At the end of the winter term there will be an opportunity for new lads to join our ranks and to those who wish to join I would say that we shall expect you to give of your best at all times, and so carry on the good name of the unit which has been built up over the past thirteen years. A. P. CULVER, Captain, O.I.C From Company notes The Goldonian Spring 1959 |
