THE
GOLDONIAN In spite of the comings and goings and of the several unavoidable interruptions during the summer term, we have been able to fulfil all engagements with credit. It is always with a feeling of regret when we lose a good boy who has become proficient either as a bugler or drummer and it gives me a warm feeling of thankfulness for the boys who have passed on their knowledge to the newcomers. On 14th June the Corps of Drums led the parade to a church service of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, and the buglers sounded the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' at the laying of the wreaths on the town's war memorial. The letter of praise and the handsome cheque received was a tribute to the boys who at this period were fairly new. Sgt./Inst. J. Lee was in command when the Corps of Drums led the procession and afterwards gave a display of marching and playing at the Watton-at-Stone Summer Fayre on 20th June. Here again the boys' performance was highly praised. The first engagement after the Wimbledon period and the summer holidays was on Saturday, 5th September, when the band led the carnival procession and afterwards gave a display at the end of Ware Carnival Week. This march was long and the day was very warm but the boys did very well and were complimented on their excellent marching and playing. On Sunday, 13th September, the boys Ied the parade of the R.A.F.A. at Nazeing for the Battle of Britain service and the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' were sounded to the roll of the drums at the lychgate memorial. We also led the parade for the church service at the Hatfield Youth Week on 20th September. A fanfare of bugles was sounded in the church which was most impressive. On Tuesday, 22nd September, we gave a display of marching and playing on Hartham Common at the invitation of the Committee of the Hertford Trade Fair. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY, 8TH NOVEMBER: The Corps of Drums had a busy day when they led the British Legion parade to Standon Church in the morning. L / Cpl. P. L. Olbison sounded the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' in the church when wreaths were laid on the memorial. After the service the salute and the march past were taken by Lieut.-Col. S. Burr, T.D., who was at one time our Battalion Commander. In the afternoon we led the British Legion parade to Roydon Church and after the service the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' were sounded to the roll of drums at the village war memorial after the laying on of wreaths. Cadet Smith was on duty with the Waterford and Stapleford British Legion and sounded the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' at the Waterford memorial. Cadet Davison was on duty at Hertingfordbury and Cadet P. Mann was on duty at Wareside. During the afternoon Cadets Morgan and Campbell were on duty at Stanstead Abbotts and in the evening L/Cpl. Olbison and Cadet Davison went to Little Berkhamstead parish church. The 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' were sounded at the evening service in the School Chapel. Cadets Smith and Sibbons were duty buglers and Sgt. Linnell gave a roll on the drum. Letters of thanks have been received in appreciation of the boys' services throughout the day. The following cadets received their proficiency certificates: Cadet M. Turner, Tub Drummer; Cadets B. Smith, P. Mann, and A. Sibbons, Buglers. We shall start our engagements in 1965 on 8th March when we take part in the Balls Park College Rag Week procession. A. P. CULVER, Captain O.I.C. From Company notes The Goldonian Winter 1964 |
