THE
GOLDONIAN Since my last notes we have had to say goodbye to L/Cpl. Geoffrey Warner who took over the duties of bass drummer from Peter Copping. Geoffrey has left to start work in London, and we wish him all success in his new life. By the time these notes are published we shall have lost several more of our leading' drummers and buglers to situations. This is a problem we are always having to face up to, but we always manage to carry on and do many displays throughout the County. This year there was not one free week-end throughout the summer, and we fulfilled all our commitments. As I mentioned in my Company Notes, we have no qualified instructor to teach the lads drumming and bugling, but I am pleased to be able to give a pat on the back to the old faithfuls that help us to carry on. This is a wonderful example to the younger cadet who is just joining. On the 3rd September we attended the Enfield Carnival and led the procession of decorated vehicles. After the procession a display was given which was greatly appreciated, and many complimentary remarks were passed during and after the display. We attended the Battle of Britain parade on the 11th September at Nazeing. The 'Last Post' was sounded followed by the 'Reveille' to the roll of drums, and was very impressive. At a fete at Hatfield on the 24th September, we gave an excellent display after leading a parade through the streets. During the School Exhibition we gave displays daily on the lawn in front of the house, and despite the inclement weather we were able to carry out our programme. On the 13th November, Remembrance Sunday, we attended the British Legion parade and service at Standon church. We marched from Puckeridge to Standon leading the Parade. During the service in the church one of the buglers sounded the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' . During the afternoon of the 13th, we attended the British Legion parade at Roydon, and after the service in the church the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' were sounded at the War Memorial to the roll of drums. The following is a list of individual duties performed by buglers on Remembrance Day. L/Cpl. Gee at Wareside in the morning and Sawbridgeworth in the afternoon. Cpl. Peterson at Hertingfordbury in the morning and School chapel in the evening; Cadet Furnise at Wheathampstead in the afternoon; L/Cpl. Bainton at Standon in the morning; Cadet Ball at Standon in the morning, Stanstead Abbotts in the afternoon and School Chapel in the evening; Cadet Peek at Waterford in the morning and Watton-at-Stone in the afternoon; L/Cpl. Ambrose at Stanstead Abbotts in the afternoon. On Monday, 14th November, L/Cpls. Bainton and Gee attended a military funeral at Chingford, and sounded the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille' at the graveside. In closing I would like to wish all ranks a very happy Christmas and a successful new year. A. P. CULVER, Captain O.I.C. From Company notes The Goldonian Winter 1960 |
