THE GOLDONIAN
2nd COY. 1st "C" BATTALION.
HERTFORDSHIRE REGIMENT

BAND NOTES

Here are the notes from the band as usual recording their many activities and confounding the pessimists who say, "What are you going to do now that you have no instructor or now that so and so has left the band?"

We have lost many good lads both buglers and drummers since my last notes and although I am sorry to see them go, there is always a cadet ready to fill the empty place.

We have had to say goodbye and good luck to C.S.M. Crampton, Sergeant Raines and Corporal Gainard who were all silver buglers also Sergeant England, Cadets Lines, Loftus and Maitland all were very good drummers. But in spite of this we have been able to fulfil all our commitments

The band did very well at the Annual Battalion Inspection, they played the company into Hertford then after the inspection they led the battalion to Hartham Common and finally played the company back to the school.

On the 4th July the band attended the carnival procession through the streets of St. Margarets and afterwards gave a brilliant display of figure and counter marching ending with beating the retreat.

The band went to Hoddesdon on the 11th July and again gave a very fine performance of marching and playing and beating the retreat. At Henham the band received a great ovation after their display and much can be said for Drum Major Woods who gives of his best at all times to the band.

The band played the company to the station on the 26th July when we attended the annual camp and again when we arrived at Felixstowe they played the battalion into camp.

We came second in the inter-battalion band competition and this is the first time in six years that we have not won the cup. This was through no great fault of the band for we came first in playing and marching. Since the return from camp the band have given an excellent performance at Hunsdon.

Congratulations to Cadets Brierley M., Brierley K., Burgar, Crampton J., and Darling on passing their buglers test, also to cadet Mecpham on passing his drummers test.

The band were again on parade 25th October when the Queen Mother came to Hertford to present colours to the 5th Battalion. Beds  and Herts. Regt. and the 1st Battalion. The Hertfordshire Regiment.

They marched to London Road barracks and after a break they led' the contingents of the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Cadet Forces to the Grammar School. From the grammar school they led the parade to the County Hall and took part in the march past the Queen Mother. The band then led the Cadet Force contingents back to the barracks after tea.

The band will be on parade on the 8th November to take I part in the remembrance service and our buglers will sound the Last Post and Reveille at the War Memorial. Duty buglers will attend the various services at Wheathampstead, Harlow, Roydon, Hertingfordbury, Stapleford and Port Vale and the band will attend the remembrance service at Stanstead Abbotts in the afternoon.

Thanks lads for your continued keenness under many difficulties and I know the younger boys will keep up the standard of the band.

I close by wishing all ranks of the band a very happy Christmas wherever they may be.
