CORPS OF DRUMS NOTES

The Corps of Drums are getting prepared for the many engagements booked up until the Wimbledon fortnight and our strength is forty-one all ranks. The winter has been rather trying owing to lack of space and a suitable building to practice in; however, the standard of playing and smartness has been maintained and we shall soon be able to use the parade ground in the evenings.

On the 28th February, 1960, the Corps of Drums had a long day, they left the School at 11.30 a.m. and returned at 7.30 p.m. During the day they went to ·Watford to meet the Duke of Edinburgh's Banner which is being displayed in all counties of Great Britain in honour of the Army Cadet Force Centenary year. The 'Banner was trooped through the ranks of cadets and then, led by our Corps of Drums, was paraded through the main streets of Watford. The Mayor and Corporation took the salute at the march past. After the parade the Mayor said how pleased he was with the smartness and playing of the boys from Goldings.

We then went to Barnet and met the Banner there. The buglers sounded a general salute and the Banner was then trooped and afterwards paraded through the main streets, the parade ended at the T.A. centre at Barnet; again the boys were praised for their bearing and playing.

Finally the Corps of Drums met the Banner at Hemel Hempstead where it was again trooped and paraded through the streets to the T.A. centre. The boys had tea and then returned to the School after a very busy day; many photographs were taken by the local press in each town and it is hoped to show these shortly.

The Corps of Drums will be on parade at Welham on 14th May, 1960, and at the Hertfordshire County Show on 19th May, 1960, at St. Albans; also at Hitchin when the Centenary Displays are held there. On the 29th May, 1960, the Corps of Drums will lead the parade to St. Albans Abbey for the Centenary Service, on 6th June, 1960, they will be at Ashwell and at Cheshunt on 11th June, 1960. They will be at Barkingside to give a display at the Inter-Homes Athletics on the 16th June, 1960.

From Monday, 20th June, 1960, to the 2nd July, 1960, a large number of the Corps of Drums with other lads of the School will be doing duty at Wimbledon for the tennis championships, so we shall be unable to accept any engagements during that period.

Before closing these notes I would like to thank Mr. Sheppard our art master who is gradually repainting our drums; these have not been renovated since Mr. Brooks did them in 1946.

A. P. CULVER, Captain O.I.C.
