CORPS OF DRUMS NOTES

This year will be a very memorable one the band for they will have many functions to attend especially during Coronation week when they will be out on parade every day. What a challenge for the younger members of the band for they will have to give us their best in order to reach the high standard of the older members. We have lost Drum Major Welsh who always gave of his best to the band and L/CpL Woods: has now been given the honour and important position of Drum Major; it is to him that we shall look for the maintenance and good playing of the band. Remember, Drum Major, the eyes of the populace will be on you and your band.

On Saturday, 17th January, the band gave its services to the battalion when a recruiting drive was held at Bengeo. The Band led by Drum Major Woods played through the streets and then countermarched and beat the retreat. They were afterwards interviewed by the Hertfordshire Mercury Reporter and a most favourable article was published by the local paper.

Cadet Gibson who has recently joined the Company and the band very kindly presented us with a bugle which gift is most appreciated.

We shall shortly lose the excellent services of C.Q.M.S. Eeles who was a very good drummer and of Sgt. Cunningham who are being apprenticed to the printing trade. They will be a sad loss but also a challenge to the younger members to fill their places and we shall expect great things of them.

This year we shall have a much harder Band competition for in camp with us will be the 2nd Battalion band; these are boys from the Royal Masonic School at Bushey. This band has had many successes and I know that we shall give a good account of ourselves. The fine weather is now with us at last and I would urge all members of the Band to give a little of their spare time to practice on the top field and as often as possible.

A. P. CULVER, Captain O.I.C.
