CORPS OF DRUMS NOTES

In my last notes I congratulated L/Cpl. Furnise on becoming Drum-major in place of John Stocking who left us to take up a job. Since then I have had to say goodbye to Richard Furnise who has been restored. Richard was a very smart lad and very keen and he kept up the standard of past Drum-majors; we wish him every success and hope that he will write to us from time to time.

Robert Hammond took over for a while and now Cpl. Bryant has been promoted to Drum-major; I know he will do his best.

Recently I was pleased to welcome Sgt.Taylor-Smith to the Company; he is a regular soldier from the 3rd East Anglian Brigade and is going to train the Corps of Drums whilst he is in the district. He is attached to the Hertfordshire Territorial units. We should benefit from his instruction for it is many years since we had a proper instructor and the Corps of Drums has done very well in keeping up such a high standard over the years without a qualified instructor.

We have accepted engagements at Harlow, Letchworth Garden City, Puckeridge, North Weald and Westmill so far but will not be able to accept any engagements during the Wimbledon tennis fortnight when most of the boys will be doing duty as ball boys.

We have lost five of our members to date and will be pleased to accept any lad who is keen and willing to come up to the standard of the unit. Being a Cadet either in the Company or in the Corps of Drums is something you can look back on with pride in later years; I know this is so, because I get many letters from Old Boys who have served with us who always ask how we are getting on and saying how we have given them something useful in life during their stay with us.

A. P. CULVER, Captain O.I.C.
